...Van Halen (with DLR) was one of the most influential and original line-ups ever. They defined an era, for god's sake. It was all about the fun and the rock n' roll (if Van Hagar fans have heard of the word). They influenced many bands like (for better or for worse) Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, RATT and many many other bands in the 80's. Those songs with DLR make you want to form your own band.
After DLR left, I didn't really like their new direction in terms of sound, with all those synth-driven songs, they're less fun to listen to. It was less rock n' roll.
EVH's guitar work on DLR era albums were amazing, you've got to admit that. Ever heard 'Eruption' or 'Spanish Fly'. Or those great guitar riffs for 'I'm The One' or 'Atomic Punk'. If you ask a guitarist why they chose Eddie Van Halen as their main influence, they'll almost always mention his work with DLR. He's influenced very notable guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jason Becker and Nuno Bettencourt.
Van Hagar fans...you can't deny Van Halen's influence when they were with DLR.
