i think sammy is adding his pre halen post halen and during halen solo totals. he may even be adding montrose. thats the only way he sold more.

even then if dlr adds his solo sales that will bring up his totals as well.

one thing that needs to be considered is the amount of time those albums have been out for example

    van halen/van halen 1978 =27 years

    van halen/5150 1986 = 19 years

thats 8 more years that VH/VH has been out there selling then 5150. Have those things been taken into consideration???

Exactly Hard Rock...Sammy does what Dave cannot do...sell albums fast!! Dave has had 27 years??? Of those 27 years he was the frontman of a band that became VH in 1896...Up until 1986 the band did not exist and after 1986 CVH tunes were born

What Sammy did was include all the sales of Roth albums while it was Van Hagar and claim those as his own.

It's so fucking pathetic you would think noone would fall for it but the Van Hagar fans did.

            Then again...

Have thought of that. Some also say that CVH outsold Van Hagar because of people updating the CVH catalog from vinyl to cassette, or cassette to CD, vs the fact that only the first two of the Van Hagar albums were widely released on vinyl.

Think enough time has passed to take a look at yearly sales since Sam was kicked out in 1996. You'd just have to see what albums are still selling.

Even in the case of 1984, which sold roughly 4 million units by the time Roth left the band in 1985, vs. the 1986 release 5150, which sold about 4 million in the first two years or so.

1984 has sold 10.5 million copies to date, or 6 million + in the twenty-one years after its initial release. 1984 was originally available in vinyl and cassette.

5150 has sold 6.5 million copies to date. About 3 to 4 million in the first two years of its 1986 release date, and about 2.5 million in the subsequent eighteen years post-1987. Also originally available in vinyl and cassette.

1984 and 5150 were released within 2 years and a couple of months of one another, available on the same formats. There's a 4 million unit disparity between the two in 1984s favor. I don't see 5150 moving 4 million back copies in the next two years. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I don't see it.

Don't think the fact that CVH recordings have been available longer or been around longer than the Van Hagar catalog really has that much of a bearing on why CVH has outsold Van Hagar by nearly 2:1.

Think Van Halen lost maybe a third to half of its fan base by the time 5150 made its debut, if not immediately after Roth announced his split from the band. Gotta remember, CVH's audience wasn't entirely made up of guitarists. Plenty of chicks bought Van Halen records and went to the shows. DLR was a sex symbol. Hagar wasn't.

If you look at Van Hagar sales, it's a downward trajectory. Each studio effort sold les than the one before it, even though they all went to #1.

Gotta face facts: Van Halen reached their zenith with 1984.

Van Hagar was a case of diminishing returns
                  from the get-go.

Those are all really good points Terry!!. The only way that i can see 5150 selling 4 million back copies in the next few years is if Warner remasters the Van Hagar catalogue.

That may increase the totals a little more. You bring up a good point where cvh fans bought the album on vinyl then maybe again on vinyl as as record got worn out. then maybe upgrade to casette then cd then the remaster cd. that needs to be taken into consideration.

I bet cvh must have sold at least a million copies of VH 2 on 8 track alone LOL. those things were terrible CLUNK CLUNK !!!
