    What guitarists came close?

Playing off thefive thread, which guitarist(s) do you think most sounded like Eddie?

For me it's no contest: Vito Bratta of White Lion. Especially during and at the end "All you need is Rock and Roll" off Pride.

Man, there were so many guitarists either copping Eddie's style or heavily influenced by it in the 1980s, it's hard to think of any that stood out.

George Lynch and Warren DeMartini stand out a little from the pack. But can't forget Steve Lynch from Autograph.

Seems like every spandexed shmuck with too much Aqua Net in his hair had both hands on the fretboard post 1985.

Bratta never did much for me. He thought he was Eddie, and Mike Tramp thought he was Roth. Second rate, and that's being generous.

Of course, you can hear Eddie's style throughout the '80s.

My point is that Bratta, like him or hate him, is the only human I've ever heard who got the exact same Brown sound out of a guitar. First time I heard "All you Need..." it was eerie. (And Bratta doesn't even do it for an entire song.) I don't think the VH cover bands come as close.

Anybody else you think captured the Brown sound?

Bratta was a real good EVH spin off. I won't say rip off cause I think he had his own thing goin.

Out of all of them, Warren DiMartini was probably my favorite. Paid a lot of attention to the notes he played. Very tasty!

Vai and Satriani have moments where they hit Ed's zone... both also incorporate some of the classical composition facets into some of their lead styles. Ed tends to blend that better than anyone though to where it doesn't sound like a mozart run until you disect it and shift the timing modes.

Another guy that comes to mind is Monte Montgomery... although he plays predominately acoustic guitars he has an amazing knack for pulling a close brown sound and musical structures that indicate he's spent a few hours with classic VH plugged into his ears. Also you can hear some of the classical musical voicings Ed uses.

Gary Hoey also hits some Ed vibes in his earlier stuff.

To me though other than a few of the 80's guys that were blatently shooting for Ed's sound... I can't say there's anyone that nails his overall range. Bits & pieces of his high gain distorted riffage hit & miss. But his underlying rythym structures run some pretty unique compositional styles which he blends uniquely with clean tones and mildly distorted modes and mixes rock, blues, classical, and various other modes into. I don't think there really is anyone that can nail Ed's full range and very few have created such a unique sound/style all their own as he has.

Randy Rhodes admitted he ripped Ed off.

Cmon Rhoads was the only guy that could come close. All the hair metal dudes were copying each other. Perhaps Ed INSPIRED them to play guitar, but cmon...

The dude from Quiet Riot sounded close to me (forget his name). Listen to the solo in Metal Health.

I personally don't think Rhoads and Van Halen sound anything alike. Even the sound of their amps were completely different, let alone their playing style.

Does Ed fully map his solos? I ask, because I don't know. But Randy did, correct?
They're SO different, they might as well be playing different instruments. And I agree, they sound NOTHING alike.
The question was about the Brown Sound. You can get into all the comparisons you want about technique and rhythm, etc., but my 7-year-old can hear the difference in TONE.
I don't know of anyone who came close to Ed. Hell, on the comparisons you guys have used, Akira Takasaki came close....

                              TONE is different

NOBODY sounded like Ed on either!
