    Who do you blame?

Who do you blame for the change in sound of Van Halen, EVH or Sammy Hagar?

Personally I think it was Eddie's decision to go mellow and Hagar just came along for the ride and an easy check. If you look at Hagar's earlier stuff, whether you like it or not, it was rock.

I just wanna get a feel for why there is so much Sammy hate when in reality who wouldn't have taken a gig with Van Halen if offered? You all would. It's Eddie's fault Dave left the band not Hagar's.

Dude, no offence but I cant stand *any* of Hagars material that I have heard. I dont want to delve into his back catalog because I simply cant stand him as a singer.

That's fair enough but it wasn't really the question.

I actually blame this more on Edward. If Edward had continue to write kick ass guitar riffs and songs, then Sammy would have been forced to rock. However, all of the power ballads and shit were Ed's way of showing he was finally in charge, because he KNEW Dave would have told him to take that shit somewhere else.

I do not blame Sammy for taking the job with Van Halen...he would have been stupid not to.

What you Sammy lovers have to realize is we don't like Sammy mainly for one thing. He started slinging mud in a battle he had no business in. It is one thing for Ed and Al to talk shit about Dave...they actually were in a band with him. However, when Hagar joined in..well...just who in the fuck does he think he is? He didn't even know Dave. Sammy was taking jabs at Dave as far back as the 5150 tour, which tells me he has a big insecurity problem.

Patti "I am the Warrior!!!" Smythe, to answer the question.

Which shows what a fucking depleted ballsac Hagar really is: even a hack 80s one-hit wonder like Patti knew not to taint the legacy and that it was impossible to improve upon. If she has that much sense - and Hagar doesn't - what does that say about Hagar?

Ed is culpable and repsonsible too - even moreso - but he's hard rock's town drunk, what the fuck does he know?

Yeah, but Sammy always had sappy tunes in his solo catalog, like Three Sides of Love, even before he got together with EVH. To assert that he didn't have that Hallmark side to his songwriting, or that he only got sissified upon going to 5150, is erroneous.

Wasn't all that thrilled with the pop flavor of Jump, musically. It's the lyrics and delivery that made that tune interesting to me. The softening of VH instrumentally was creeping in before Roth split.

Montrose was never a big deal to me, and even the rock tunes in Hagar's pre-Sam Halen career were never anything that excited me. Sam always had a knack for compiling cliches, stringing them together and calling it a song.

Think it was Ed wanting to add or explore a more commercial vein in his music (maybe he felt he had peaked, guitar-wise, or felt burnt out, or whatever, i dunno), combined with Hagar who just wasn't the guy to bring anything all that original to the table that made Van Hagar sound the way it did.

Can also totally agree with BrownSound1's point that a lot of ill-will came Hagars way when he decided to add his two cents about Roth, 'specially during 1986. Was one thing for the Van Halens (and Mike to a lesser extent) to have hard feelings towards Roth. Regardless of whatever Roth was saying about him, had Sam kept his mouth shut about the whole CVH split and Roth and let Van Hagar's music do the talking, he would have been better off for it in the long run.

Only reason I figure he chose not to go that route is because he really did think what he and Ed were coming up with sounded better than anything Dave had brought to the table.

It was Edward and Alice. Sam went along for the ride. He was the perfect high pitched faggy voice to compliment that new drum kit and synth approach that the brothers invisioned as a money maker. They forgot about their fans along time ago.
