    Dave's influence on other vocalists...

I remember there was one Van Halen video I saw where Dave was kinda bent over, and he turned his head and looked away from the camera for a moment, and then turned his head and looked back at the camera....

So anyway, after that video came out, like a pack of trained chimpanzees, I saw several vocalists in various club bands aping that same move....

And then of course, leg warmers became popular, and it became cool to have a bunch of bandannas hanging off your belt, etc.

I have always despised trend followers. Dave was an original. Unique.
And it was often funny to see other singers doing their best to act like him.

Of course, there were many guys out there who were trying to copy Ed.

I knew one guy in Kansas named Glen, who was a complete and utter Ed clone. He later moved to L.A., and one of my friends out there saw him and told me he was the same. Did his very best to buy all the gear Ed used. Spent his days and nights trying to be like Ed (though I dunno if he could drink as much as Ed).

I mean, it is one thing to emulate your musical heroes long enough to find your own identity, but this guy had no identity of his own. Just wanted to be Ed.

As far as that goes, I would not mind being a world famous rock guitarist with an actress wife and a home in Beverly Hills....but I would prefer to be one WITHOUT being a drunk asshole...

Before Van Halen there really wasn't that much rock and roll. Disco was huge at the time and you had funk music as well. What little rock and roll there was was someone in platform shoes, long hair, bell bottoms with an unbuttoned shirt. The guitar of choice was a Les Paul.

Van Halen sort of looked that way on their first two tours but they had the good taste to ditch the platform shoes.

Nobody was wearing spandex in a rock band until Dave. I think a lot of that had to do with the fact he was high energy on stage and it allowed him freedom of movement.

I think Dave was a victom of his own success. He set off the whole 1980's big hair, spandex trend. All those copycats sucked ass and Dave gets tared with that brush from the uneducated.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

Roth had a definite impact on hard rock frontmen in the 1980s, 'specially those in American bands.

Take a look at Stephen Pearcy, Vince Neil, Bret Michaels, Jon Bon Jovi, Janie Lane, Sam Hagar (particularly after he hooked up with Ed and thought a half-assed Dave impression would suffice)....even someone like Kevin DuBrow, who was played the same LA clubs during the same period Van Halen did before they were signed. DuBrow stole a few pages from Roth' over-the-top interview style, 'cept Kevin left out the humor component and just came off like an asshole.

After CVH hit it big, and especially after MTV began showing classic Van Halen clips non-stop, it took about a NY minute before you had video after video of bleached-blonde frontmen doing splits off the drum riser, or high kicks, trying to scream like Dave did (yeah, yeah, sheep, Roth stole it all from Jim Dandy, blah blah, 'cept Roth put his own spin on it and eclipsed what Dandy was doing, unlike the many Roth wannabes). 'Cept all of the forementioned dudes were posing as cool. Roth just was cool.

Years have gone by and several copycats has passed thru as well
but now....have any of these copy be better than dave ?
                    None...
no one had that in yo face to the crowd ...attitude
no ona had the bluesy based voice that gives soul to roth's interpretations
no one had the perfect moves, that roth came out with
The great mistake they did was tryin to copy dave to be almost the same...but they didnt work !
cause dave aint a copy of just one guy ...
dave's magic and authenticy resides in the combination of influences
on his own life and musical background, dave did rehearse that moves
several times till it was perfect, rehearsed the high note, but althought its all rehearsed he made it look natural and spontaneus.
if not...look at us fest and other 83 concert all the same jokes and
always the same guy squirting water at him.
always the big mouth open like he doesn't believe the crowd response
always the current crowd was the number one
                    anyway...that's magic and charisma.

Just take a look at VH1's Metal Mania and you will see all the aforementioned!
Bands from A to Z tried to be like VH.
They tried to copy Dave, ED & even Alex with their various drum kit setups & colors, Quiet Riot for example.

                        Sorry Mike

And that's something Van Fagar fans never admit.

Look at Sham during 5150 and then look at his look for OU812!! 1988 saw the faggot straighten out his afro hairdo, wear it longer and all of a sudden, he was wearing Spandex on stage!!

It was so obvious Sam was insecure about his place in VH that he tried to cop Dave's look and style to please the fans.

                          What a loser.
