Call it ribs with a side of the blues and a heaping helping of ’80s hair band cheese. Organizers of Naperville’s Ribfest have announced two more headliners for the four-day Independence Day weekend extravaganza.
Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth will be the festival’s opening night headliner July 1.
And blues and country performer Kenny Wayne Shepherd will cap off the main stage entertainment July 2, organizers announced. The two acts fill out a headliner bill that already includes rocker Ted Nugent’s all-ages show July 3 and a performance by country music legend Loretta Lynn on July 4.
“Our entertainment committee got this put together and we believe it will be a hit with a number of different groups and fans,” publicity liaison Mike McManus said.
Conspicuously absent from this year’s lineup is an adult contemporary act such as last year’s Sugar Ray or 2003’s Hootie and The Blowfish.
“We feel we’ve got the best lineup to fit the event,” McManus said.
Despite her age and longevity, Lynn’s performance may draw the youngest crowd of any of the performers. Lynn scored Grammy awards and critical adulation this year for an album produced by Jack White, whose own band, The White Stripes, is one of the biggest acts in rock these days. Lynn’s album, “Van Lear Rose,” was an amalgam of old country twang and roaring garage rock.
Roth likely will perform songs from his solo albums as well as hits he scored with Van Halen. “Diamond Dave” has gone back on tour after making headlines last year when he was spotted working as a paramedic in New York.
On the local Ribfest entertainment front, organizers will hold auditions starting at noon June 5 at Naperville’s Holiday Inn-Select for a local talent showcase that will feature 15 of the best acts on July 1, with the winner of that grouping performing on the main stage July 4, McManus said. Bands and acts can submit their audition CDs and tapes to Todd Peterson at NCTV 17, 127 Ambassador Drive, Suite 103, Naperville, IL 60540.
