Here's my take on it. Dave's day job is giving it his all on stage and giving the fans exactly what they want - which he does. In fucking spades. He plays all the songs you want to hear and after two and a half hours we all go home very happy safely in the knowledge that we have witnessed a legend perform in front of us. He's a frontman and as we all know he wrote the book on what a frontman should be.

But the reason the guy is my idol is because he lives for the moment and does whatever he wants to do. Nobody dictates to DLR. Whether its deciding to climb some fucking Himalayan, give himself to the masses through a radio show or trek down the Amazon again he will do it because he wants to. Don't live in the past 'cos Dave sure doesn't.

May 10th 1984 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.

My first real concert. In all my life so far, I have not seen one better. It was the standard to which I held all future concerts, and while many have been great, there has been none greater.

Drove up with a bunch of buddies and some chicks in about four cars doing speeds of up to 100 mph on 280 just to get to the parking lot and tailgate party for 4 or 5 hours before the show. Talk about an off the hook party!

When we finally went to get in line, the line going into the Palace went in a big square about 100ft x 100ft with a single garbage can sitting in the middle. People were hurling glass bottles as high into the air as they could trying to make a basket in the can. Meanwhile, drunk as f**k morons were making the dash right across the middle of the square amidst all the broken glass in a mindless streak of glory I guess.

I remember a big drama between two of my buds about this chick, and she didn't go home with the one she came with, and all this transpired while waiting in the drunken, stoned line...

Inside the show, they had this band called The Velcros I think, playing and they were the worst thing I had ever heard. People were throwing everything they could throw at them. VH had a reputation back in the day for hiring lame openers so as not to detract from their show. Well, they needn't have worried.

All of the sudden, the lights go down...

There is an explosion of light, and I see this blonde, long haired wild man jump 20 feet into the air and do the splits, touching both his feet with his hands and arms outstretched... ...an onslaught of music and sound as his background... ...and I have never been the same person since.

And from then on it has been Dave or the Grave, baby!!

Rock on Classic Van Halen!! May you again rise from the ashes one day!!
Enjoyed reading this email, cuz I live in Los Angeles now, but I'm a bay area girl from the Peninula (Millbrae) and I had a ticket to the Cow Palace show VH did in 1982 - "Bill Graham Presents" and I didn't GO!!! Instead, I wanted to hang out with my boyfriend....What a Waste of my Priorities....I still have the ticket...I could kick myself for not having gone to it to see DAVE and his Mane and Ed before AA !!!

Watch out for the dude with the funky blonde perm, or the dude from the YFLM era, or the old lookin' dude on the front page of DAVIDLEEROTH.COM!

He doesn't give a fuck what any of us think!

            Never has, never will.

Wait....it was "Always had it, always will!"

Right fuckin on with the ramblin' post Leadsinger777. I too am new, and have been waiting to drop my CVH salt shake here.

The bottom line is that he did give us slam dunk when many didn't think he had it in him.

              "Always had it.....Always will"

I was at that cow palace show working backstage for bill graham presents. After they got off I saw the singer from loverboy gush like a bitch while handing dave a towel, and Neal Schon from journey follow eddie like a puppy dog.

              I hear ya

Fuck....I might of even had to sweep up that glass.

Well, those were definitely the days to see them... ...you really missed out. As Earl would say, "I'm not really sure how to un-ring that bell." :D

I guess it's my turn. To start off...welcome LEADSINGER777 to the Army. Hope you stay awhile! As far as never seeing Dave, don't feel so bad. I'm 30 years old...have been a fan since I was 10, and the only time i caught the Diamond one was back in 2002 in Jersey (Dave and Sammy concert). Let me tell you...Dave was amazing! The min. the lights came on and HOT FOR TEACHER started he was on fire! He kept the crowd on their feet for the full 50 mins. He didnt stop moving once bro. He sounded great and ended the show off with him doing his classic split off the drumriser. Sammy was a joke. He had NO energy and Half the place got up to use the bathroom or do some more partying (if you know what I'm sayin). ANYWAY! David Lee Roth in my eyes is the greatest frontman who ever lived....period. I don't mean just him vocally....I mean that ENERGY! A whilwind of rock god energy. My two favorite things in life are music and film...so i pay close attention to detail...and that is why I consider Van Halen with David lee Roth the best rock band to look up to. That was a chemestry that any band would die to have. Why do we live in the past? Good question....I guess we do that because there isnt much today to look up to as far as music is concerned. Nothing captivates me and holds my attention for more then a couple of mins. A lot of music today is "Hear " today gone tomorrow. Sad huh? How's your band man? You play anywhere on Long Island?? Let me know! Anyhow keep on rockin LEADSINGER777 and keep the faith in Roth!
