You've got to remember...when the Kinks wrote that song it was like nothing anyone had ever heard before.

It was a groundbreaking song (at least the guitar sound).Originally Posted by WARF:

Yeah I still like VH's version better, Ed and Dave just tore it up.Originally posted by DLR7884

You know...I have to say for me it's a total tie. THE KINKS, THE WHO and maybe one or two other bands are my "other favorite bands". And I love THE KINKS version a lot...
...hmm...maybe the VH version by a slight margin...but it's hard to say...
I definitely prefer the VH version of WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD TIMES GONE...a great tune...Roth Army Militia

That's the first VH song I ever heard. Turn the clock back to April 1978... here's the story:
I heard the Kinks version on the radio for the first time and absolutely fell in love with it, but I didn't know who the kinks were. Then I told a friend about the song and he said it was Van Halen, so I went out and bought the album, went home and discovered Van Halen and never did buy the Kink's version... to this day.
I think both versions are good. Each has its own merits.Comment

The Kinks wrote it, so the title belongs to them.
Ever see a tv show called "Overhaulin", same principle.
You can take a classic and alter it, and it may be the shit compared to the norm, but it still ain't original.
I love what VH did to it, but even then, they didn't write it so you can't have one without the other, and the author deserves all the props for the initial product.
That's just how my bean pod works on stuff like this.

Ray Davies once said in concert, "we're gonna perform a Van Halen song now." I think that speaks volumes.Comment

Ray is a truly gracious guy. Very classy dude. I think he also said some positive things about the VH version of WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD TIMES GONE.
In '68, when HELLO I LOVE YOU was released, Morrison and the Doors were criticized because the melody is virtually the same as the melody in ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT. Davies very publicly told people to leave Morrison alone. He said (graciously) that it's not a rip-off and he loved the Doors track. Truth is, the melody IS the same...but Davies just doesn't have an inflated ego like some.Roth Army Militia
