Come to think of it, he personally had paid for the Ice Cream Band and the whole Vegas venture - a sizable investment, that both times went nowhere.

Sometimes your worth whatever on paper, but it's invested, you can't touch the money...if the bank was giving him a loan (and remember, even if Dave does have the cash, standard practice is to spend someone else's money: in this case, potentially the banks), they want some collateral..the hom is the easiest source for that.

I have a close relative who put a book out. It went into a second print. It was a bestseller for a while here in Australia. She did the publicity thing and whatnot. Granted, she wasn't a celebrity (although she was appearing on TV weekly for a year or two prior to its release) and she had a co-author, but she saw nowhere near 20 percent. She could have lived off the profits for maybe 6 months. I really can't remember the exact figures, but in the first print, she saw something like $2 from each copy sold, I think. Factor in the cost of publishing and the publisher's cut, the cover art, etc, and it leaves very little for the author. Maybe, being a major celebrity, Dave got a great deal, but it wouldn't shock me if he didn't make that much from it.

With that said, Dave probably doesn't have to worry about going broke soon. When he said he was touring to make payments, that wouldn't mean he had nothing in the bank. It would just mean that he was using the proceeds of touring to pay for the film. The guy makes more than any of us (and spends more, no doubt) and can probably live off the VH and solo royalties (Yankee Rose, Just Like Paradise) until the end of time.
