Brandmeier's return to city stuck in Infinity
Published August 24, 2005
If Emmis Communications really intends to land Jonathon Brandmeier as its morning man on Chicago's WLUP-FM 97.9, it's in for a very long wait.
Industry sources close to the situation tell this column that Brandmeier, who is said to have more than a year left on his Infinity Broadcasting contract, will not be released early to work at "The Loop."
Meanwhile, Infinity has no plan to hire Emmis' WKQX-FM 101.1 morning man Mancow Muller to replace New York-based Howard Stern at Chicago's WCKG-FM 105.9, the sources said.
This would seem to scotch published reports of Brandmeier returning to WLUP in time to exploit rival Howard Stern's imminent departure for satellite radio.
Brandmeier, a longtime Chicago favorite who made his debut here in 1983, has been off the air collecting Infinity paychecks since a format change at Los Angeles' KCBS-FM this year.
Much speculation has stemmed from the anticipated domino effect of Stern taking his successful national morning show to Sirius satellite pay-radio. His Infinity contract runs through the end of the year.
While Infinity has regional replacements penciled in for many of its Stern slots--Adam Carolla is reportedly set to work out of Los Angeles, and David Lee Roth from New York--no one has been tapped for WCKG.
Competitors also are trying to get their ducks in a row to fully exploit Stern's exit, bidding to take a share of some of the listeners and ad money that don't follow him to Sirius.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday that Brandmeier met in Los Angeles last week with Emmis executives. The talks were characterized as moving forward, though the paper backed off its earlier reports Emmis might trade Muller to WCKG in exchange for Infinity freeing Brandmeier to do mornings at WLUP.
