I never thought about Steve and Dave being in a band together but I think it would work wonderfully. Steve is a wonderful guitar player and is used to being in a band with an egoed out singer who likes to be flamboyant.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

i think it was even before that. Dave thanks Steve on the liner notes of EEAS.

hard to say how it would have turned out...Stevens is as big a control freak as Dave is.

it's exactly why. that's why Stevens left Idol in the first place...and when Stevens got his solo deal with Warners, he told them he wanted pretty much what Prince got-final say on everything. probably the reason why WB only put out one Stevens solo record too.

I think he geve Vai a loan of souped up Marshall amps.

I believe Stevens was Dave's first choice for EEAS. Then he also wanted Yngwie Malmsteen. Stevens played on Vince Neil's first solo album, no?

David Lee Roth contacted Steve Stevens very shortly after Van Helsing moved on. There were actually meetings involved, but if I remember correctly, Stevens was still with Idol, and actually pointed in Vai's direction as a potential guitarist for Roth.

Stevens wanted his own gig, and got it. Didn't work.

Funny thing about it is Stevens ends up in Vince Neil's first effort 7 or 8 years later. He and Neil agreed on shared writing arrangements, and did the song that I think ended up on the encino man soundtrack, and eventually was the first release off of Vince's album. Stevens was with Neil for a short while, and that's right, ended up opening for a Hagar-led Van Hagsuck shortly thereafter. Stevens left before that tour was over.

disappeared, and ended up back with Idol.

If I remember correctly, Stevens left Idol "for good" in 1987. They weren't on bad terms, but Stevens wanted to make a name for himself. It's been rumored that the Roth conversations was the beginning of the end with Idol, as Stevens began realizing he was a commodity.

He left Idol, and immediately did the Michael Jackson gig, ala Eddie, for Dirty Diana. As a matter of fact, I think Stevens showed up in the video.

He did some other ecclectic stuff...showed up on I think the Thompson Twins, the System (remember that song 'Don't Disturb this Groove?), Robert Palmer, Ric Ocasek and Joni Mitchell. He was at Live Aid with the Thompson Twins.

In an interesting twist, he put out two albums as part of the Bozzio, Levin, Stevens trip...with Terry Bozio--former Steve Vai bassist.

He even showed up on Gregg Bissonette's 2000 album.

                              So the connections are obvious.
