Eddie would have upstaged the other legendary rock guitarists Vai, Satriani & Malmsteen without even trying if he would had joined the G3 tour besides EVH is the last great rock guitarist of his kind after Hendrix, Clapton, Beck & Page who had any major impact on the rock scene when VH exploded back in 78.
Why hasn't Eddie joined the G3 Tour????

I'm a bigtime fan of Eddie's early work and his guitar playing in general. He's the reason I learned how to play but the guy can't hang with Vai or Satch.....fucking SAMBORA mopped the floor with him on that "All Star Jam" thing.
I think Ed has the skill but his head is too fucked. Vai and Satch are sober, focused and well trained....like two fucking racehorses.Comment

Look, as a guitarist, I can't let my anger towards EVH for the way he's handled the whole Van Halen situation cloud my judgement on EVH as a guitarist. He IS one of the top 5 rock guitarists of all time and I'm sure he could more than hold his own on stage with Satch and Vai. I saw G3 this past summer and as much as I hate to admit it, Malmsteen blew away Vai and Satch.
Vai is a tremendous guitarist, but when I saw him at the G3 concert, he was too reliant on effects, looping and all that cosmic sounding shit and left me disappointed. Stach was good, but his set was WAY too short compared to Vai and Yngwie and the man should never sing in public ever again. His rendition of Neil Young's "Rockin' In A Free World" was terrible.
Malmsteen still dresses like it's 1986 and prances around the stage like a goddamn fairy, but his playing is still amazing. Can't stand the guy but I have to give him his due.
I have absolutely no doubt that a focused and inspired EVH could more than hold his own on stage with Satch and Vai - in fact I think he could blow them both away - IF he has his shit together mentally. EVH is by far the most innovative rock guitarist of all time. He's an idiot for the way he has handled the whole disasterous situation with Van Halen, but I can't let that fact cloud my judgement towards him as a guitarist. The man has influenced more people to pick up an axe than Vai and Satriani combined.Comment

I am no huge Toto fan, but Steve Lukather can play with almost anybody. He can shred and does a ton of session work. Eddie recorded some instrumental music for a Christmas album that Lukather put together late last year. During that time Lukather jammed with Edward. He said Eddie kicked his ass! If that is indeed true, then Edward would not make a fool of himself on a G3 tour. However on a good day(and maybe most days) Yngwie would win the shredding war over Eddie, Luke, Vai, and Satch. He may have to call up Shawn Lane(RIP) from the dead to give him a real challenge.Comment

I have several live concert videos from the EEAS and Skyscraper era and I did not notice that Steve played vh tunes so bad.
So my question is how some of you say Vai is so good in concert (G3 concerts) and some of you say he plays vh tunes so bad?
I think Vai kicks ass.

Vai is too much into wanking with his axe. Same with Satriani.
Not saying Vai isn't technically talented. So was Sheehan, but that EEAS lineup, especially live, was just a shred-fest that got real old real fast, and this is coming from someone who plays guitar.
Eddie was a great soloist, but also did some great rhythm work and never sacrificed the song for the solo. With Vai, I always get the sense that whatever's being done on the verses under the vocals is just occupying time until he can solo.
And Vai has an awful tone. Satriani to a lesser extent.
Yngwie had the classical edge to his playing, and avoided going weedly-weedly-wee by making sure his solos were compsitions unto themselves. Very melodic.
Vai gets the nod on Going' Crazy and Ladies Night In Buffalo for putting some effort into the solos in terms of melodic content, but on ShyBoy, Elephant Gun and Big Trouble he's just spanking. Boring.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

If Eddie loves to play guitar and most of you Van Hagar fans think he's so great, how come he has not joined the G3 tour that is known around the world as the best guitar players in the business.
This Summer, Vai will be going to Europe with the G3 tour and they always add a New guitarist to the list every tour.
1. Could it be, Eddie is afraid to play with the best musicians out there?
2. Maybe, his talent has been lost? and no one can stand to have him around besides....LSD and SPAM!
3. It must be that DAVE isn't there to show him how to hit the right strings for the right kind of sound we would all love to hear!!:DOriginally posted by RIKK
