What a Day, What a Band

Just finished watching Metal Sunday from the 83 US Festival.
Van Halen rocked the shit out of that crowd.
Watching these guys are that their peak brought back a flood of memories.
Man I yearn for the glory days.
Van Halen was, is and always will be the greatest rock n roll band of all time.

It's amazing how a couple hours can last forever in people's minds. The actual concert itself must have gone by in a blink of an eye yet so many fans like us relive it on a regular basis. That's what's so great about rock and roll music....especially the classic Van Halen kind....it lives on forever. I watch that video regularly.

I have a bootleg copy....Don't get me wrong it was an amazing show...but..it was NOT there best performance...and I can't blame them. That was one of the biggest shows and I'm sure they were partying for 2 days straight. Dave and the boys are loaded beyond belief during that one! I love how they open with ROMEO DELIGHT and Dave forgot the words! I always laugh at that...only Dave could pull that off and still have the crowd forgive him. Classic...

I just pulled this out and watched it this morning.

although great they were clearly wasted, its amazing ed could do what he did back then so well during the solo. youth rules for sure!

when dave says Mr. EVH afyer eds solo it gave me chills. Mightyl they were and ed has nothing to be jealous of. ed was as much fun to watch on stage as dave back then. to bad he has so many bad memories cause these guys sure look to be close and having a ball.

after I watched a little bit of argentina 83' .... they must have not been as drunk cause dave was on that night. all the words and the band was tight! def a great performance!!!!!!!

was ed and alex pulling out house of pain(I think it was) when dave said he needed a drink and never came back at the US fest for quite a while ? they were looking for him. was a bummer.

I will agre US fest not the best performance by far. but still great VH. how many people can party that hard all the time and still function on stage ? lol

            They were partying for sure...

...I've seen Dave forget ALL of the lyrics to Just Like Paradise before....The audience just sang it for him!

I love Full Bug on that...It's an almost different set of lyrics too.:D

The only really weak moment is Unchained...Dave fucked that song all up.

Of everything...Little Guitars and Dancing In The Street are my favorite songs of that night...Dave Mike and Eddie's vocals are classic! It really brings back memories of when Mike and Ed were good singers. Thats an often forgotten piece of the CVH pie.

It's not just VH's performanace that amazes me....

That lineup on Heavy Metal Sunday was the greatest festival lineup in music history...

                Interesting website...thanks.

Here is a notable guestbook entry I found there....regarding Dave's sobriety, or lack of...

"Great Moments in Televised Show Business History! This issue:Van Halen, US Festival ‘83 by Henry H. Owings DLR transcription by Sarah Jacobson As many of you will remember, Apple Computer threw a weekend festival called the US Festival ‘83 at the Glen Helen Park in Southern California. Among televised highlights (at least as far as I remember) were The Pretenders, The Clash and an overly theatric U2 with Bono climbing the stage’s scaffolding, almost breaking his neck in the process. What a goon. Well, as luck would have it, Van Halen closed ceremonies on the middle night. They were paid $1.6 million for their performance, which was, at the time, the most a group had ever been paid for a gig. As legend has it, they insisted on being paid more than David Bowie in order to play. Bowie was paid $1 million. Not bad for a night’s work. Now, David Lee Roth is a man who conjures up equal amounts of sheer amusement and respect around the Chunklet offices, but on this particular night, he couldn’t have been more whacked out of his mind. Here’s the deal.... What We Saw On Television: Right before Van Halen went on stage, millions of viewers saw a pre-taped (read: staged) skit go on backstage involving Diamond Dave, a piano, two groupies and a bottle of Jim Beam. However, the reality of the situation was far more rock (read: hilarious). What Really Happened: Moments before going out on stage in front of 670,000 fans (not to mention all of the viewers on then-two-year-old MTV), DLR was barely able to stand up, after a day of rocking and/or rolling. As the rest of the band went on stage to earn approximately $200,000 per hour per person, their soon-to-be-shitcanned lead singer puked and followed that up with two lines of cocaine, then rushed on stage! Now, that, dear reader, is rock’n’roll! Below is the transcript of the “stage banter” after the second song. Elapsed time is five minutes! The time was necessary to get Roth to sober up, but what transpired was nothing short of hilarity! Please keep in mind that Roth is performing in front of what The Guinness Book of World Records called the largest attendance for a concert. Let’s take a look at the damage: (“Runnin’ With The Devil” ends) Well, hello, Glen Helen Regional Park! Look at all the people here tonight! Oh, man! I’ve got to make an announcement right here. Can you hear me out there? (screams from crowd) Hey, man, don’t be squirting water at me! I’m gonna fuck your girlfriend, pal! I just wanted to say that as of right now, this time tonight, more people have been arrested today than the entire weekend last year, man! You a rowdy bunch of motherfuckers! (extensive screaming, 48-second pause) Who likes rock’n’roll? Yeah! Yeah! I’ll tell ya, this is the time of the evening when the band gets to have a drink, right here. Ooooohhh-ohhh. (Roth’s midget assistant comes out and hands him a bottle of whiskey.) Is everybody having a good time so far right here? (screams, whistles and cheers, 40-second pause) I want to take this time to say that this is real whiskey here. The only people who put iced tea in Jack Daniels bottles is The Clash, baby! (segue into “Jamie’s Crying”) "

Dave "forgot" the lyrics to "Romeo Delight" on a regular basis...but it's still a great touch.

Yes. Yes. And more yes. I remember the US festival in the year of 19 and 83. Yes. What a show. The musicianshiplicity was simply unfrevulestic to the most boyenttfic of musical mastronomy matters.

1983. The US festival, with a young band from the city of Pasadena. The day will be of historirical in the annelmies of rock and music munipalicty. And what does one young one need to know to relive those classicficminetic meories of the year ofn 19 and 83?

Let me, your street preacher, David Lee Ross paint a Picasso of a picture that would be etetentulate the days activitonmies.

You see. To relive that day, if you were knee-high to a grasshopper or just a drop dripping from yo daddy's legs, you would have to see it this way. Remember when you just started grade school and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made by Grandma Hopkins that would turn the the toaster on and off while she was preparing for her weekly gin rummy games. and when those games came on, there would be oil leaking from Daddy's car when he parked it in Uncle Freddy's driveway. I say that because you don't know what to get when you get a treat from Cousin Jeremiah and the local Burger King. Remembering when we was kids, trying to decide on a whopper or a big mac when we was at Mac Donalds. It's like that. Or it can be look uponn this way. Remember when we walked to the library to get some reading books only to find out that the local soda ran out of H2O and the the crawdads were no longer there so we had to turn baqck and ride our bikes to the neighborhood Penny's so we could get the baseball mitt we were saving up for. And we worked hard to get that glove. Just working and then saving our money only to find out that money was the same whether in your pocket or in the bank.

So, the US festival is like a plane flying 3000 feet above ground but how does that 30000 feet look when you are driving on the expressway looking up? Is that 3000 feet, 3000 feet from top to bottom or bottom to top. Or if need be, try a different perspictive. Take the distance measured, turn it sideways,a annd stick a bannana in the tail pipe of a old Nova car. See, isn't it easier when the moon rotates during a nightly eclipse of the heart? Then things become darker and night while in the North Pole, Santa be getting his slay ready for us kids. Ahh, those were the days. Good times. Good times for all.

I know here at the DLR Army that we need us members to give a offering to maintain this greatisculoputic forum. Money is no object when it comes to your street preacher, David Lee Ross. I would like to donate a check in the amount of whatever is needed. And right now, the amount is needed in our community treasury. So, my check to you good people at the Army well be put into safekeeping in the community treasury since that's where is most needed.

I was glad to be of service to all you good people and I'm glad you were able to relive the moments of the US festival of 19 and 83 by reading my post. Thank you to all and I love all of you!

Above is a check originally to be donated to support the DLR Army but out of necessary situations, the check will be redirected into my, uh I mean, the community treasure chest.
