We've all read that ALAE was a great album at a horrible time to be released. As 80's rock was comming to an end and the whole seattle movement...nirvana, pearl jam etc moved in, ALAE seemed to stick out like a sore thumb. I've read in many places, including here, that the seattle movement was credited with ruining the popularity of that album. 500,000 copies isnt a lot for the diamond one, as some of his records have actually gone diamond (10million+).,

If alae were released instead of skyscraper, do you think it would have done better than it did in 1991/92? Do you think ALAE in 1988 would have sold better than skyscraper in 1988?

Of all the solo albums, alae is 100% for sure my favorite.

What do you all think? gimme some good feedback!!

I dunno if it would have sold more, I often find it hard to understand why such or such album by such or such artist sells better or less well than another of theirs or somebody else's, so...
I think "A lil ain't enough" is Dave's best record just like you do (the most Dave-like IMO), but who knows how many copies more (or less) it would have made in 88?
I'm still pissed that it didn't sell the millions it should have back in 91. Then again, it's a cold cold cold coldfish's world...

ALAE would not have sold better than Skyscraper in 1988 since it wasn't as good as Skyscarper in my oppinion. Parts of it sound like Skyscraper revisited to me but it never quite rises to the same heights (no pun inteneded). But don't get me wrong, ALAE is pretty damn good, just think Skyscraper did it first and better. Now if ALAE had been released halfway between EEAS and Skyscraper that might have been an interesting scenario!

The album sold over 1 million copies, WB refused to certify it platinum.

A million copies is very respectable.

ALAE would have sold more if Jason Becker had not become ill.

Seeing him live would have driven sales up.
