I always thought of the Hagar thing like this: VH with him was a DIFFERENT band, like a regular old glam-rock band of the late eighties, you know you hear Black and Blue and all that on the radio, and you just kinda shrug your shoulders, like "whatever" But with Dave, VH was simply one of the top five greatest rock bands of all time. With Sammy, they were maybe in the top 150, just my 2 cents. It's just my way of trying not to trash Ed when people say they suck now (whicj they do), you know, trying to respect his legacy.

There was no magic in Van Hagar music, even on it's own merit, all comparisons to the classic lineup to one side.
However, the comparisons are unavoidable, inevitable and richly deserved, since
a) three of the four members of Van Halen are in Van Hagar
b) They're still playing classic Van Halen songs live
c) Van Hagar is touring under the name Van Halen
There's simply no tension between Ed and Sam. Van Hagar had a few listenable tracks. Am not going to say everything Sam, Ed and Co did totally sucked by default.
A lot of it had to do with timing. Ed was pretty much it as far as guitar heroes went from 1978 to about 1983. Then the LA shredders/2nd generation shredders came out of the woodwork. Yngwie's fleet fingers didn't help any. By the time Roth left in 1985, Eddie's style had already been aped to the point where it was no longer special because so many were ripping it off.
Plus Sammy knew he was getting a shot at being in a name band. Sure, Hagar had a degree of visibility as a solo artist prior, but o you think he was gonna walk into Van Halen and tell Eddie when his playing wasn't up to snuff? Course not. Whereas Roth knew Eddie from the beginning, before the fame, and had no timidity in saying so.
Ed's at the helm of the band now. Hasn't had to share it with Roth in years. Now nobody's going to push Eddie into writing something other than pop melodies for nursery rhymes other than Eddie himself.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

There is no chemistry between Hagar and Eddie.
Some great chemical combinations:
Roth/Eddie
Page/Plant
Jagger/Richards
Clapton/Heroin
Van Hagar has about as much chemistry as Page/Rodgers had with the FIRM....bullshit wanna be top 40 shit.Comment

The magis is the mediocre payday Ed's gonna get from this tour so he can pay his alimony. He coulda made a boatload of dough and some meaningful, topical, still completely viable music. But he prefers the "All soup and no fish" route. Shitheel.Fuck Scott Weiland. Fucking asshole. I get trashed all the time and still go to work. And my job sucks ass. -ODShowtimeComment
