Wow I wish I had time to post a more intelligent response because I am basically pro-Free trade and pro-NAFTA. Restrictions on trade are just plain bad for the economy and that is the only way Congress was keeping industries like textiles profitable in America. Yes in the short term there was a definite move of certain jobs in certain industries to other nations and this was difficult for a lot of American families, but at the same time, restrictions from other countries that have hindered many of our industries were lifted as well resulting in more jobs in those sectors. NAFTA is about trade liberalization and letting industries in a particular country prosper where it is competitive for them to do so on the global market. While certain areas of the job market in every country will have to learn some new skills, and there should be more of a safety net in place to facilitate this in America, competitive industries will benefit in a reduction of discriminatory trade rules while consumers should enjoy lower prices and increased choices of the goods they demand.

Without Mexicans, who the fuck is gonna change the sheets in my hotel room?

        You?

I doubt it. You think that you should be the CEO of IBM. And you know who you are.

FHS, while much of what you say is suppose to benefit us with lower prices in this country, there still seems to be some debate about the issues of child labor and slave labor in some of these third world countries ? I guess because I was directly affected by NAFTA's impact, it's hard to recover (not for me...I moved back to California and began work in Silicon Valley, so you are forced to get up to the speed of high technologies, computers, etc.), but for many of those workers in SC, to learn a new skill ... some of them maybe 10 years away from retirement found it difficult to adjust to the changing times.

This ties into my opinion of Wal Mart. One of my big issues was that in the beginning of Wal-Mart's advertising campaign, it was about buying products from the U.S.A. - it was all gung ho, patriotic...then they caved and started to carry products made from China....

I do still think this would all be a great topic for DLR to discuss because we all have an opinion, whether the same or opposite, but it's all debated with respect to one another and it's stimulating Talk Radio

Damn I knew as soon as I started posting my opinion I wouldn't be able to get back to work!

Well I can't debate you on your first point. You are absolutely right, although probably not on a large scale, and it is a concern I have as well. I am also concerned about minimum wage laws in other countries. Supposedly the UN Declaration of Human Rights deals with the issue of Child Labor and, I would have to check the text of the document, but NAFTA may as well. The problem is the enforcement of international law. NAFTA sets up an international tribunal to hear complaints on trade violations (the World Trade Organization). I am not sure the issue of child labor has been addressed or whether or not any complaints on the issue of illegal child labor have been made. Yet the WTO has ruled on many complaints in the last decade and countries by and large have abided by those rulings. So at least there is a judicial agency set up by NAFTA to deal with illegal violations of the trade laws.

As far as labor being forced by the market to learn new skills - yes - I acknowledge that for the time being it will be and has been difficult for many to adjust and that it might not be fair without appropriate domestic support for these workers. But it was restrictive trade policies that kept these people employed in these jobs to begin with and in this instance there cannot be change for the better without some sacrifice. Now I might be singing a different tune if I was one of the people who was sacrificed, but the answer lies in (and I can see the conservatives reading this who thought based on my former post that I was one of them) more social programs to assist the workforce especially while they are modifying their skills.

And furthermore, blah blah blee blee blooo!!!

                I have posted this before.

If they are here illegally, they should be rounded up, herded into a cattle truck, and shipped back to MAY-HE-CO until they can get their fucking LEGAL paperwork processed.

I have no problem with LEGAL immigration.

I totally disagree. An old school bus would be more appropriate than a cattle truck.

But government should make easier for people who want to work to get that paperwork or they will keep coming illegally.

Those parents may want their kids to learn French. Why should those kids have to learn English, French and Spanish?

Just so happens that all of my kids do speak Spanish. But, we decided that as a family. We all saw the value in them learning that.

But, no, IMO, it should not be mandatory.

In quebec where I live we've been having this debate forever... Québec is the only French speaking place in north America we are close to 6.5 millions that won't surrender to the English, we have our own television ,radio, schools, writer, musician,ect... Plus we have the english side as well, English is mandatory in school from an early age, and it is important to know it if you don't wanna be isolated from the rest of the world.

But here we have a law called bill 101, and basically it says that every sign or writing ( store highway ect... as to be in french ) and if you are born from french parents your kids will go to french school and the same applies for the english speaking people that were born here(english school, with mandatory french class)...

If you are an immigrant living in the province of Québec you will go to French school...PERIOD!

                              Voilà!
