You know when discussing one band having bigger albums or having bigger tours over another I'm not sure it's fair to just point the finger at management. Not that it isn't a factor but it may also be tied in a big way to the genre or era of music we're taking about.

Some bands from the 70's and 80's do seem to translate to big shows still, but generally as part of a “package” bill. Although there are some that seem to keep perking on as kind of an anomaly (can anyone say Steve Miller?). Skynyrd. Ozzy. But Styx, Journey etc., although they do seem to be able to sell some tickets to somewhat big sheds in the summer, they don't sell any albums. Unless they, like Prince, include one with the ticket. People who grew up with Ted Nugent might go to a show, on a bill with ZZ Top, but they aren't buying his last album, which, last I saw, was well under 50,000 copies at about 40,000. And half the shows played by this kind of artist are at State Fairs or casinos.

Heck, radio stations that fit into that kind of music format won't even play any of the 70's or 80's artists’ new music. They're happy to play "Smoke on the Water" but have you heard any of the many Deep Purple albums released in the last ten years played on the radio? Cheap Trick, UFO, Rush, Ted, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Dave, ever hear any of their new music supported by a major radio station? I haven't, other then niche shows like Dee Snider's House of Hair.

Remember when John Kolodner, one of the more famous A&R guys, was going to launch a label that would feature all the rock/metal artists that could still sell a few tickets but never sold any new albums and try and find a way to market their new music? It seems that was abandoned, at least that's what some of the stories surrounding it seemed to say.

I think, ultimately, it may just be that the core fan for this kind of artist just doesn’t spend any dough on new stuff or, unfortunately too often, tours.

I heard the same thing with JK, sounded like a good idea.

I will say I did hear plenty of Def Laeppards last 2 albums here in boston on the radio when they were released.

"Paper Sun" & "Promises" were played on the radio alot when Euphoria came out and " Now" when X was released. which BTW are good albums. too bad no promotion.

I am a fan of all that music and do buy it. thing is the family man or woman dont generally keep up with music if they are not music fans in general. but if the music was promoted I think the industry would be quite suprised at the people still wanting to buy the music.

I read an interview with Vivian Campbell recently. He pointed out that, unlike the other members in Def Leppard, he wasn't loaded simply because they don't sell albums anymore, that the days of selling albums were days when he wasn't in the band, and that they can't get a record company to promote their new stuff.

I don't think I've ever heard a "new" Def Leppard song in rotation on any radio stations in this area. I would think that would mean Boston is still a relatively strong market for them. My guess is the major markets are the strongest for most artists in that kind of situation.
