Rock Star: Van Halen Rumors Unfounded

I got off this rollercoaster a while back, but I'll play along today.

    February 14, 2006, 4:45 PM ET

    Katie Hasty, N.Y.

Persistent rumors that Van Halen will audition new singers on the upcoming season of CBS reality series "Rock Star" are untrue, according to the network.

"All it is is a rumor, we deny it," a CBS Entertainment spokesperson tells Billboard.com. "We don't even have [an act] firmly established yet, though, hopefully we will shortly."

A spokesperson for Van Halen referred Billboard.com to a previously published report in which the band's involvement with the show was vehemently denied.

Speculation of the "Rock Star"/Van Halen pairing has been running wild since the fall when, in an interview, the series' producer Mark Burnett ("Survivor") used the group as an example, along with Queen, as an act appropriate for the show's mission of filling vacancies.

The story got new legs during this morning's (Feb. 14) broadcast of the syndicated David Lee Roth radio show as the former Van Halen frontman declared, "They really are gonna do it, I think. It's the 'Rock Star' open call schedule. They just handed me the schedule... they won't say who it's for, but I think it's for Van Halen."

"Rock Star," which is co-hosted by former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, has indeed announced its audition schedule. Tryouts will be conducted throughout North America for about a month, starting March 1 in Austin. An announcement about the featured artist is forthcoming, according to the CBS spokesperson. The network plans to air the program's second season this summer.

The first season bowed last year as "Rock Star: INXS." The Australian band ultimately crowned J.D. Fortune as its new lead singer, recorded an album and is on the road in North America, playing Reading, Pa., tomorrow night.

Since Roth exited the band in 1985, hard rock crew Van Halen has been helmed by Sammy Hagar, who left the band in 1996, and former Extreme singer Gary Cherone. Attempts to regroup with Roth failed, but a reunion with Hagar resulted in a tour in 2004 and new songs on a best-of collection.

      Is anybody conscious?

Auditions start in 2 weeks and they don't know who the band is?

      who's believing this?

ever hear of the term publicity?

The show has done well to get publicity but they contradicted themselves by saying we won't say who it's for....but before they said we don't have an act yet.

I'm playing along, BUT, like ThrillsnSpills...Billboard reads as thought DLR reawakened the rumor which is UNTRUE. I saw the article on www.TMZ.com, AOL.Entertainment and ContactMusic.com ALL on SUNDAY, 2/13. So, Billboard got this incorrect...DLR didn't resurrect the rumor, he just reported Sunday's crapola.

Van Halens lied to DLR in '96, so what's the difference today? If they have discretionary cotracts with THAT reality show....everyone is going to try to stay mum, but I think sources want to see DLR's reaction and you know he's got inside sources at CBS.

Van Halen denies it will star in CBS' 'Rock Star' sequel -- again

                            By Steve Rogers, 02/15/2006

For the second time in less than four months, Van Halen is denying reports that it will be fronting the new upcoming second season of Rock Star, the CBS reality series that found INXS a new lead singer during last summer's first season of the show.

New reports that the band would star in Rock Star's second season emerged earlier this week, with AOL's TMZ.com website reporting that sources had told it that Van Halen would star in this summer's Rock Star: INXS sequel. Reached by TMZ.com, Van Halen publicist Larry Solters declined to deny the report. "I'm not denying it. I'm not going to answer any questions about it," Solters told TMZ.com in a story published Sunday.

However that didn't last long, and similar to what happened last fall when MTV.com also had a difficult time attempting to understand the band's publicist's doublespeak (an event that ended in MTV formally retracting its report that Van Halen would appear in the then still unordered second season and issuing a mea culpa correction), both Solters and CBS are now both denying that Van Halen will star in Rock Star's sequel.

After TMZ.com published its initial weekend story, Solters contacted TMZ on Monday and "vehemently" denied that the band would appear in Rock Star's sequel and explained that his previous comments had been "in no way" intended to confirm that Van Halen would star in Rock Star: The Series (CBS' current working title for the show, given its current absence of an announced band.)

CBS also voiced in on the matter on Tuesday. "All it is is a rumor, we deny it," a CBS Entertainment spokesperson told Billboard.com. "We don't even have [an act] firmly established yet, though, hopefully we will shortly."

In the meantime, the lack of a firm second season star -- or, if last month's comments from Rock Star's producers are still accurate, a firm decision as to whether Rock Star 2 will even feature a previously established rock band as its star -- that hasn't stopped the show from beginning its casting search.

Although applicants aren't being told many details about exactly what they're trying out for, Rock Star has already begun accepting mail-in applications, with its North American casting call tour scheduled to begin March 1 in Austin, TX. Reached by Reality TV World last week, the show's network spokesperson confirmed that interested singers are presently being asked to apply for the show without knowing whether they'll be attempting to join some still undetermined existing band or instead joining a Making The Band-like series that will result in the formation of an entirely new rock group.
