Dave FM doomed from the start?

Let me start by saying, despite the fact Dave's show has gotten mixed reviews - I enjoy it. I just started tuning in on the website, so I haven't heard most of the episodes, but I'm slowly digging my way through the archives.

With that said - I don't think Dave will last long on the air. The reason being - he's replacing a broadcast icon. Howard Stern. No matter what your opinion is of Howard (I thought he was great up until Private Parts came out, then he kept recycling the same old stuff) he was the one guy that turned the radio industry upside down.

The execs at CBS have very high expectations. They are used to seeing high dollar profit margins. Roth's show will not deliver the same ratings as Howard's. Not even close. That's not because the show is horrible, it's because the demographic Dave attracts differs from Howard. Stern's strength was he lived and died by entertaining through the lowest common denominator : DICK JOKES. No matter how old you are, regardless of your religion; your financial status, etc...a dick joke never loses it's luster.

Dave simply doesn't play by the same rules. I think he's slowly diving into that territory by interviewing the strippers and porn stars. But for the most part - it's been about his life, or cultural hot topics.

The bottom line is this - Dave is in the same shoes as Ron Zook and Mike Davis. Those are 2 coaches that had to replace larger than life coaching icons in that of Steve Spurrier and Bobby Knight. They both didn't last long.

I never want to be the guy replacing a legend. I'd always want to be the guy replacing the guy replacing the legend.

Your thoughts on this long winded rant?
I bet I can throw a football over a mountain.

By the way, Jon Stewart was the first choice to replace Howard. I forgot who their second was. My point being - Dave was 3rd or 4th on the list.

        Hellz Yeah!

But how do you get Sirius for free?

I have free Sirius music stations that came with my satellite TV but I don't get talk stations.

Dave is a fabulouse guest and an ok radio host. I preffered Howard Stern being the host and David Lee Roth being the guest. It was better listening by far.

It all depends on what your taste in morning radio is. I happen to think Dave's show is great, it's just that Howard Stern's is funnier. It all depends on your preferences, IMO.

I enjoy the show. As a fan it's cool to hear Dave's thoughts and opinions spontaniously rather than hear him talking in riddles or metaphor's when he's being interviewed . I think that tended to stick in people's minds who seem to think Dave was just a bigmouth. What they fail(ed) to realise is that behind all the flash and showmanship there's a very intelligent Sumbitch !

              Roth on !

Dave is well read and has experienced a lot but I wouldn't say he's intelligent. He's smarter than the average pot smoking, coke snorting 80's rockstar by far but they guy is out of it on a lot of issues.

His support of the war in Iraq because people are being bullied and belief the the United States should be the world's policeman is pretty dumb. Gee, most the world is bullied. Maybe we should go to war with North Korea, Sudan, Somolia, Cuba, Venzuala, Saudi Arabia, Yemmen, Iran, China, Ziare, Sierra Leon because people are bullied in these places as well.

Then Dave likens this to him almost getting killed by stopping a homeless guy from abusing his dog in NYC was a rediculouse self-promotion of Dave's huge ego on the air.

A lot of Dave's Ideaology and strategy is dumb as hell. Where he is smart is he can find all the countries mentioned above on the globe and even tell you a little some of them. As a military strategest or a political scientist, Dave is a joke.

Corolla and Rover aren't going to pull Stern-style numbers, either, and CBS Radio knows it.

Radio being a matter of taste is a very accurate statement, The CBS execs have to work for a living now and actually produce radio. For 20 years they let Howie do it for them and then the rest of the day they played music. I do not think Dave got a lot of support. I do not think the Infinity crowd at the old K-Rock has a clue. Coupled by Dave's inexperience and the fact that Dave most likely does not want any help. I am sure the stories of him alienating everone at the station is true. In true Dave fashion he will do it his way do or die. On the stage that may be OK. On a national radio show under all the aforementioned, it may not fly. Dave and all the "replacement" jocks are in the same boat. The likes of the revenue stream that Howard brought in may never be realized again in radio. Although I am not in love with the DLR show. I do not think it is better or worse than anyone else out there.

Oh yeah.. Dave's point about the middle east is that we are guarding the gas station and kicking some bully ass while we are there. he has said the gas thing over and over again

You need to speak on varied high profile topics. You cannot please everyone all the time. Does anyone think Howard did?
Obviously not that why he was run out of terrestrial radio. Dave could have Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed on for guests and someone would find fault with that. He could have the world's hottest strippers and porn stars and someone would find fault with that. Dave is in a no win situation... he knows it and that is why he was looking for the out with the reunion. He wants to end his career as a winner and the reunion is the jackpot....The shit with rock star would further tarnish his great legacy.

                              Dave's show is not bad.
Sure he talks a lot of rubbish some times and some of the interviews are just plain boring.

It depends largely on whom he is talking to.
Often when alone in the studio just rambling on with the regulars who laugh histerically at everthing then the show becomes really annoying.
He also tends to repeat himself. How many times has he told the audience that he's a paramedic and that all the music played is from his own collection??...yawn.

When the guests are interesting and actually have something to say then the show is great. Check out the interviews with Henry Rollings or Lloyd Kaufman for example.
