New host loses most of Stern's audience

In the year's least surprising radio development, morning host David Lee Roth's early ratings at WFNY (92.3 FM) have taken a steep drop from the heights of his predecessor, Howard Stern.

WFNY's parent CBS says this is a valley it expected to enter while it rebuilds former Stern slots and stations, though some people in radio warn that it could signal a more serious problem.

It's also unclear where displaced Stern listeners are going.

Arbitrend ratings released yesterday show that in January, Roth's first month, WFNY's morning share among its target audience of 18- to 34-year-olds fell from 13.8% to 1.3%.

This is what I was alluding to in my Phil Hendrie thread. I don't think CBS and Infinity fully realize what kind of monster they have created by letting Stern go to Siruis. This will change everything in the landscape of radio as we know it.

You have valid points, BUT in knowing this and sure, CBS knew that by letting STERN go to Sirius, there was no way in hell they were going to get anyone and I mean anyone who could step right in and give the ratings that Stern could.

Whether it's ROTH or OPRAH, or PHIL HENDRIE, there is no way that these "personalities" were going to win STERN fans over...just not going to happen. So, yeah, the guys in suits knew that STERN was going to take away much of their market share, no doubt.

But even knowing this slump would happen and if they were to get a "larger than life personality" other than ROTH to fill the morning timeslot, the numbers would have come out the same.

ROTH's numbers are better than ADAM CAROLLA's and he's got a team of comedy writers, including Jimmy Kimmel - if ROTH gets the axe, CAROLLA might be getting it too.

Would like to hear Phil Hendrie's schtick - at least he got the part of ROTH being the Greatest Frontman right - so he might be right about ROTH not being on Radio. Nevertheless, ROTH fulfilled a childhood fantasy....he didn't fail....it's when you have the desire and don't try.

Roth's ratings were still better than Carolla's trainwreck radio? AWESOME! :D

They made one of the smartest decisions they could when getting Uncle Dave to replace Stern.

In business-speak, David Lee Roth is a BRAND name that is a household word, whereas ANY OTHER RADIO PERSONALITY they could have come up with as a replacement would have been totally unknown to the public at large.

Maybe the unplanned vacation is actually a planned re-tooling.

I've been enjoying the show but have said since day one that it's the numbers and CBS's expectations that matter most for Dave's radio career to continue. This first release of numbers (a 12point drop in a key demographic) can not bode well for the Diamond One. Of course, there could have been a 30 point increase for the non-mentally challenged demographic, the opposite of which best represented the previous Stern audience. Seeing one set of numbers can make the picture look quite bleak for Dave but we haven't seen all the numbers and it's still possible that CBS is happy with what Dave is doing (perhaps even pulling in a more mature audience that could equate to a more sophisticated advertising clientele...that means $$$, baby). If CBS sees the other numbers as a positive boost to listener ship and advertisers start coming back then Dave's radio career will continue.
I suspect we'll have a better idea of what's going when/if Dave returns next week. If the show has been changed then things probably aren't looking good; if the show's the same then CBS has faith in the Diamond One.

            Just my opinion,
            M

First of all, Howard was never going to stay at Infinity. He was sick to death of the editing, commercials and the FCC, the religious right that is trying to control everything people see, hear, say, think.

So, they had 14 months officially to find replacements or a replacement strategy. The dumped a lot of money into people like Dave, knowing that there's no way they will ever match Howard's ratings. Money poorly spent IMO.

But, I say again, Dave needs time to build an audience. He should have had a bigger built-in audience, though.

This is such a disaster for Infinity that they are trying to distract from it, by suing Howard, laughably for "talking about Sirius while he was on Infinity stations".....like Infinity didn't have the power to stop him from doing so.

They're circling the drain, and unfortunately for DLR, he may be an early casualty.

For we fans, we may get the man back into music sooner than expected.

That's a dumb statement. I like Howard and I'm a college grad with a pretty good I.Q., if I do say so myself.

Advertisers know what makes up Howard's show, and it definitely isn't uneducated, unemployed dopes.

Hiring David Lee Roth for clean radio is like hiring Heidi Fliess to make sure the girls in the college dormatory stay out of trouble.

Roth is failing miserably because he's bland. He is suppossed to be clean radio. Nobody wants cleanliness from Dave, we want the old Dave. It's not working. Dave was not meant to talk about politics and domestic issues. Dave was meant to glue furniture to the cieling and to fuck your girlfriend.

Nah, it wasn't a dumb statement. It was a facetious statement and as such should not have been taken seriously.

                      So...

Relax!!! I was making a point about missing information. Speculating that Dave may have received huge number increases somewhere other than the 18-34 age range.

With Howard's numbers and scope he was an advertisers dream regardless of who was listening, and that includes mentally challenged college grads who think an IQ score has some significance or relevance.

                        This thread is bogus

Daves show is the brightest show i've heard in a long time

Who cares about Stern did anybody really ever care

Dave is either on the air or off

I just want Dave to make some bucks entertain some people
                        an have a good time

demographics shmemografics Radio morning drive show are just that

We ain't restructuring the sea floor thru plate tectonics here

If he is off the air I see no reason to Web cast a radio show from a city i don't live in..

The same place the people who listened to New York's number one afternoon drive show went --

either they got the satellite radio and listen to Stern and then the other rock stations on there (cuz now all there's left in NYC is Q104 and it's not really a station people who listened to KROCK would flock to) or they're not bothering with the radio at all (CDs, ipods, etc).

I like Dave's show and I think its quite professional. It's the perfect setting for him. He's well-read, articulate and one of the best at bringing an R-rated message through a PG-rated grid: In fact, that's one of his greatest talents as a lyricist and entertainer.
