Howard Stern successor David Lee Roth charges that his days as a
nationally syndicated morning show host are numbered, following a list
of mandates from his bosses at CBS Radio that he refuses to oblige.
"I was told we have too many broad-based subjects like gun control and
abortion, that I shouldn't play ethnic-based music [and] I should stop
reading e-mails from outside the U.S.," Roth said. "They're gonna come
after me on this, and ultimately I'll be fired, but I refuse to dummy
down," he told the New York Post.
Roth spent the majoirty of his four-hour morning show on Thursday
ranting about the changes that CBS has said it wants, including a
sidekick, subjects that are more funny and less dark, no Latin
references (doesn't fit the demo) and a less cynical approach to his
persona.
Howard Stern defended Roth, saying that CBS president Les
Moonves-whom Stern has been railing on consistently since CBS Radio
filed a lawsuit against him last week-was setting up Roth's
downfall. " Bring a guy in, $4 million a year. Destroy him. And you
can see they're setting him up to not pay him because they're saying
he's not cooperating. You'll see. They'll fire him. They won't pay
him," Stern said.
Roth, meanwhile, was interviewed by Stern's Sirius news show Howard
100, and suggested that CBS' breach of contract suit against Howard
Stern might be "frivolous. I have to question now if this is somebody
trying to take a poke at an artist who has bailed. You know, it's one
of those 'Well, if I can't have you then nobody will have you things,'
" Roth was quoted saying in the New York Daily News.
Howard 100 reporter Steven Langford asked Roth if he took heat from
station management over his on-air comments, in which he called his
bosses "stooges."
"Oh, they took great offense, and [Mark] Chernoff, my program director,
says, 'I realize you were trying to make fun of me and perhaps even
ruin my day,'" Roth said. "I said, 'No, no. My intention was to turn
your whole [bleeping] life for the next three weeks into a toilet. Now
are we prepared to talk?' "
