    'the replacements'

    "Van Halen

Original lead singer: David Lee Roth.

    Replacements: Sammy Hagar, Gary Cherone.

When Roth's enormous ego became insufferable to the equally enormous egos of the Van Halen brothers, Eddie and Alex called on Hagar to fill the lead singer spot. It was probably the most intelligent thing the Van Halens ever did, Hagar's arena-rock vocals being the perfect foil for Eddie's guitar heroics. But the Van Halens and Hagar had the inevitable clash of egos. After Roth was called on to replace Hagar -- for all of two songs on a greatest hits package -- the brothers reverted to form, ditching Roth and hiring former Extreme vocalist Cherone in one of the most bonehead moves in rock history."

I read this thread title and I was expecting a commentary on Paul Westerberg's legendary 80's band.

It would have been more entertaining than reading about "Hagar's arena-rock vocals being the perfect foil for Eddie's guitar heroics. "

That WAS a hugely stupid move, but 'one of the most bonehead moves in rock history'?

Surely the single most boneheaded move would have to have been getting Hagar back in the band for a second run in 2004!!!

The sheer stupidity of it is simply unparalleled!
