Basically, every 80's hair band singer wanted to be David Lee Roth. Not just your obvious LA bleach hairs like Vince Neil either.

Joe Elliot from Def Leppard. Remember the "Air Roth" imitation he did in the "Photograph" video.

It carried over into the next wave too. Andrew Wood has already been mentioned. I can guarantee you that Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, and Layne Staley were big fans of Van HALEN as well. It was just a fact of life in this part of the country, if you gave a shit about rock n roll at all.

            Here's The List:
            Andrew Wood of Pearl Jam
Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chilli Peppers
            Hombres G?? A Latin Group?

I was suprised to see the Red Hot Chilli Peppers guy up tere, You can kinda here it though if you listen closely.

The only "shoking" thing is how short this list is.
Dave has influenced the legendary world famous Hombres G?? Un-fucking-believable!!

Dave is actually the first one to admit that he is not a great singer.
I think somewhere in his book he describes himself as sounding like "four flat tires on a muddy road"

No doubt, Dave always had far greater charisma, wit, honesty, a sense of irony and intensity than his peers before or after him...No pretender wannabe-frontman in the world of heavy rock ever came close to matching that....
I think this is precisely what makes him a great frontman.
Dave's showmanship and Ed's guitar work is what made Van Halen big.

But i always maintain that quite apart from Dave's undeniable excellence as a perfomer, it is his vocal talents that outshone everything else.....Dave was a superb vocalist (primariy in classic VH), with a highly impressive range, tone, vibratto, variety, and sheer ballast and technique that not just wowed his fans but inspired an entire generation of aspiring rock/metal vocalists to follow..the comparisons with Sammy are absolutely ludicrous..it's a no-contest in my book...
As a singer Dave was never a superb vocalist with highly impressive range etc, etc...
Its just that his voice (and antics) fitted perfectly with the classic Van Halen sound.
To put it simply "Dave just sounds cool!!!"

In a recent Classic Rock magazine there is an interesting article about VH.
Apparently during the recording of the first album they had to re-take Dave's vocals over and over again because Dave kept fucking up.
...so much for doing the recordings all in one take

Dave's lyrical and vocal powers outdid anything Sammy ever did or fantasized about...Sammy is just a sickening screecher with a pedestrian vocal style that bores and/or maddens me to the verge of violence.... ....some dribble....
I absolutely agree that Dave's lyrics outdo anything Sammy has ever done.
Also the work Dave did with Van Halen and solo by far outdid anything Sammy ever did.

However I must agree with those who say that Sam has the better voice.

Its like comparing Ozzy and Dio with Sabbath. No contest that Dio is by far the better singer and always has been.
However alot of the early Sabbath songs just sound so much better with Ozzy then when Dio does them.

Just for the record. I've been a big DLR fan for more than half of my life. I prefer Classic Van Halen and dispise what happened to the band after Sammy joined. I just refuse to behave like a sheep and deny the facts.
