Let me start by saying the ROCK band Van Halen’s lead singer is/was David Lee Roth. Eddie Van Halen started a new rock/pop band in the mid-80’s with Sammy Hagar singing. This second band was good, but not great as was the 1st.
We as David Lee Roth/Van Halen fans should not hold any grudge or animosity towards Sammy Hagar. Sammy did not take David’s place. David had already left the band before Sammy and Eddie were even introduced. We should thank God every day that the new band had Sammy Hagar rather than Patty Smyth.
Listening to Eddie’s magnificent guitar playing with Sammy is much better than him changing directions after the breakup and scoring movie soundtracks (ala Stewart Copeland, Danny Elfman, etc…). We all know he already had plenty of our money that he didn’t have to work another day in his life.
At the very least, we were still able to buy new albums after Dave’s departure, and see Eddie perform live (his 20 minute solo is why many of us went to the shows to begin with).
As for the 2004 reunion, Sammy was man enough to put aside his differences, if only for one summer, and make the tour happen. He admits that it was terribly difficult working with Eddie during the tour, but he swallowed his pride and did it for the fans. He even sang a majority of Roth era songs because I think he knew this was it for the fans. Anyone who saw that tour, and has seen The Waboritas live, know that Sammy was having a tough time enjoying himself up there with Eddie.
So before we trash Sammy, try imagining what would have happened had he never came into the picture. Would Dave had come back right away? Doubtful. I would rather have 5 semi-crappy albums of Eddie’s guitar playing, than zero albums.
It’s better to fuck a fat chick then it is to live a life of celibacy.
I am waiting for that torch to be lit, as I have since 1985. And I will continue. Until then….
Peace out.
