Forcing him to do it, or him doing it for financial reasons...I can't see where that is gonna get the best out of him. It'd be doing it for all the wrong reasons.

The guy is just too fucked up and he and his brother just have piss-poor attitudes about Roth and their own classic legacy...to them the band is centered around Ed and Al, and they probably think it always has been.

To fail to reunite with Roth in 1996 and go with Cherone when they damn well knew everyone wanted to see Dave up there, well, that says to me that they don't really care what people think, and that they're certainly not gonna do what would please the fans...they even said as much at the time, saying they have to please themselves first, then put the music out and if it touches one person, Mission Accomplished.

So when it's that kind of mentality, the meth and booze aren't really the central issue.

However, Ed is in a handbasket headed for hell as of late. I was loosely basing the thread's premise on that premise. The disregard for Roth, as well as public opinion, has been there for awhile. IMO, Ed's obvious downward spiral isn't exactly conducive to putting any of that aside.

If Ed is fucked up then he should get help, but Ed looked pretty sober when he was giving those interviews in 1996, and he still didn't want Roth in the band, plus who knows how much Ed is really drinking these days, or if he's on hard drugs or not. Wouldn't astonish me to find out he's fucked up OR completely straight at this point.

I think if they had management that had half a clue, then they'd be told it's just good business sense to reunite with Dave, and that pissing off their fans is bad business practice, because these guys are a business just as much as they think they're artists. Am not talking right or wrong here, but Van Halen was a rock and roll commodity as much as anything else.

I think Ed had some realization that there really wasn't an overwhelming response to Van hagar getting back together, and I'm sure in some ways it perturbs him to think that people still want to see Dave in the band after all these years, but it would be useful to Ed to think of CVH as a gift, a past to be proud of and a vehicle towards the future.

Nothing the guy does with any other singer is gonna be given a fair shake, and I'm sure THAt must drive him nuts, too, but at the very least there are (for now) still people RABID to see him out on the road with Dave again. How's he gonna feel if he blows it off and then comes around to the idea ten years from now and few give a shit, or after one of the CVH members dies...

Sure, he and Dave always had tension between them, but getting nice guys like Hagar and Cherone in there hasn't produced anything that's endured or stirs passions like CVH still does...

If Ed stops looking at his past like something that imprisons him and embraces it as a means to make new music and bring happiness to the many who want another taste of it, then he's already halfway free...
