Heard/saw Sam and Ed on TV @ Farm Aid. The 5150 album was mostly awful. I Why Can't This Be Love? was a huge let down. to say the least. Was suspicious of Sammy joining the band because I did not like most of his solo stuff, I Can't Drive 55 included.

Saw the 5150 tour @ Rosemont Horizon. It was OK, but lacked Dave-era material. Big mistake for those guys to turn their backs on such great music. How could they do that? I was newver able to catch VH live wirth Dave. There is no doubt which version of the band was best.

Saw Dave on the EEAS tour @ Rockford MetroCentre. It was awsome. Those guys were on fire and I think they blew Sam Halen out of the water. Tesla opened up for DLR on that tour, and I really liked them.

That's another thing: Sam Halen had BTO open for them. I thought that was weak. I was never into those guys.
        Bottoms Up!

I figured Van Halen would get a new singer...and I'd get 2 versions of a great band...

when EEAS came out...I was 1/2 right...

and I didn't know much about Hagar...other than a few tunes...and new he played guitar...so I was intrigued a bit...

but when that first song came out...Why Can't This Be Love...I remember thinking that my band was singing ballads...then I bought the fucking thing...and liked a tune or two right off the bat...Summer Nights...and...can't remember now...but think there was another that I like...

but a few weeks later...I had listened to it maybe 4 or 5 times...and new that Van Halen was done for me in that incarnation other than a listen here and there...

Of course...over the years...you listen to Hagar talk about HIS version...and it makes you want to throw up...and watching spED's spiral into hell has been painful...

but yeah...my initial reaction was the potential for 2 albums over 2 years...

          but such is life...

          Well put Poj....My thoughts exactly.

I HATED "why can't this be love" when it first was played on the radio. But...I still grabbed 5150 when it came out and liked SN and 5150. The rest was just "filler", nothing that made me say "this is cool". Unlike EEAS which blew me away from the get-go.

I still held out hope for VH though....

UNTIL OU812 came out....It was then that I knew VAN HALEN was dead and gone...

So, I followed the "EEAS" and "Skyscraper" tour buses around New York state for a couple of weeks...

the rest is History...history according to ROTH!

I'm interested to know about what people thought, firstly, when he quit the band and, secondly, when Hagar was announced as the replacement? Was it completely heartbreaking when you first heard Why Can' This Be Love or did you hold out that maybe some of the new stuff would continue in a CVH mould?
