    NEW YORK POST
    ONLINE Edition
    By JOHN MAINELLI

March 30, 2006 -- DAVID Lee Roth appears headed for another showdown with CBS Radio - this one potentially fatal.
Howard Stern's replacement - who got more rotten ratings news earlier this week - was mysteriously absent from yesterday's show on Free FM (92.3), the day after a reported run-in with management.

Roth has been broadcasting - with frequent technical glitches - from the Winter Music Conference in Miami this week.

"He is on his way back from Miami and is scheduled to return to the air on Friday," said a CBS spokeswoman, declining to explain the two-show gap except to say that "he was not suspended."

The former Van Halen frontman was ordered to make significant changes to his radio show this week, sources told The Post. CBS brass read him the riot act last month, too, but this time were much more forceful, the sources said.

CBS execs are insistent that the famously stubborn Roth get a Robin Quivers-style sidekick, take direction from his bosses and put more effort into his show.

There is reason for concern. Roth's audience was down to an estimated 32,000 listeners last month, off 88 percent from Stern's 277,000 last December.

Stern has claimed on Sirius Satellite Radio that he heard Roth "does no show prep or post-production meetings, curses when he has to record commercials [and] is always angry and complaining."

After his first dressing down last month, Roth complained on the air that CBS wanted him to be a Stern clone ("more Paris Hilton than Paris, France") and vowed, "I refuse to dummy down."

Since then, however, his guest roster has included strippers, porn stars and even Roth's own version of Stern's Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf - a diminutive lad named Two-Foot Fred.

Roth was replaced yesterday and today by mid-dayers JV & Elvis - no strangers to early rising after hosting a top-rated wakeup show in San Francisco for several years.

I just love how it's widely reported that Roth has gone from ramblin' interviews with Uncles straight to K Roc's inability to do a remote radio show. Dave looks bad, because CBS have NO IDEA whatsoever how to draw ratings. Howards show was successful because it was original.

Why in fuck cant they just let Dave be original too?

          News From Audio Graphics:

David Lee Roth, An Exercise In Futility
Bail out. Abandon the program. Stay in Florida.

You can probably add to the above messages to David Lee Roth, or throw a couple of lines to CBS Radio like: Bail out. Abandon the program. Keep him in Florida.

It's time to admit a mistake's been made by placing David Lee Roth in a morning drive time slot. Wait. Check that... by making David Lee Roth a radio show host.

At a time when the radio industry is struggling to regain its footing in the wake of an audience and advertiser revolt against poor programming, the last thing you want on the air is a program that has no direction and is led by a person who doesn't have a clue about what makes entertaining radio.

Wait. Check that... the last thing you want on the air is a couple of people who don't have a clue about how to do good radio, that are sitting in for a person who doesn't have a clue about what makes entertaining radio.

By now you know that David Lee Roth has disappeared from the air for a second time in as many months. I'm not sure where DLR gets his work ethic from, but for any morning show host to think they can simply not show up at will dismantles the relationship they build with the audience. That these so called "days off" happen with each release of Arbitron trend reports throws a little more gas on the flames of suspicion.

Howard Stern left, and CBS Radio was left with a terribly perplexing problem; how does it deal with a predictable decline in audience? That the CBS CEO, Joel Hollander, would admit "you don't replace a talent like Stern easily" gained nods from millions of radio listeners. It even bought CBS time, with sympathy, from 70% of an audience that was willing to give a chance to any replacement.

But, to replace Howard with someone who 1) doesn't understand basic principles of broadcasting; 2) is so caught up with their own past greatness they refuse to see their ship sunk long ago; 3) feels there is going to be anyone that waits for him to get over a night of no sleep; is a slap in the face to those in the audience.

CBS Radio has a problem. David Lee Roth also has a problem. One is how to get out of a contract that it so vigorously supported less than 90 days ago; the other is how to (gracefully) exit a disaster.

The time has come to fold the show. In three weeks nobody will remember David Lee Roth. Fact is, if you look at rating trends, few people are thinking about him today.

Mostly, this story is just turning into fodder for publications that want to rehash how bad radio programming has become.

Publisher's note: While listening to David Lee Roth's replacements this morning (JV & Elvis), I was treated to a discussion on New York City sewage, a song parody titled "I Pimped the Whores," a barrage of honked out swear words (presumably, because these hosts thought it was funny), and laughing about a person who was stabbed five times with a scissors - all, of which, preceded an unintelligible interview with someone about diets AND a discussion with Andrew on how a "bit" wouldn't be used because it "wasn't good radio" (in part due to it not containing words like "bitch").

Dave doesnt have a problem. He has an easy job, with asshole bosses, but is still highly paid to give us "The Roth Point of View" kind of radio. I love it.

$4,ooo,ooo/year? 2 year deal? Problem? Wha?

You know, I've heard everyone from Brett at the links to the Opie and Andy fanbase to the sternfannetwork badmouthing the Roth Radio move by David Lee, and some of it I can understand, after all, if you love Stern you WANT whoever follows him to fail, there's obviously an interest in fans of the competition for the same.

In that sense, and in what David Lee was attempting to accomplish, he was doomed out of the gate, ANYONE would have been. Stern recognizes this.

I can't understand, why, if you like the Van Halen stuff, and if you are a FAN, why you wouldn't be supporting DLR in this. What's Dave going to do? Dealing with Edward Van Halen, who is by most accounts so far over the cliff of sanity, cannot be an option that is even workable.

I like Dave. I thought it was cool when he wanted to be an EMT, just pick something and pursue it. Like he does with the helicopter stuff, the Ken-Do™, all that. Yet, even over at Vonnies, like here, I see dissenters about this Roth Radio thing and I just can't understand it. You're happy that David Lee is failing? Yet you're a fan? Can someone explain that to me?

It's like an OJ thing - if I can't have you in Van Halen, no one can have you. I think I will slice your fucking throat out on the patio.

Well, ok, being a dude, I identify with the rage that boiled in OJ because let me tell you PUSSY is the most powerful of things. But we're not talking about PUSSY here or anything like it.

To me what it is... either you have basically an extended David Lee Roth interview every week to the tune of 20 hours a week... or you've got David Lee laying low in NYC being an EMT and no press whatsoever? No rothisms, no perspective... you know, Dave's PERSPECTIVE is one of the things that makes him great.

Hell... Roth Radio? I want the fucker running the country!

He's very Tony Soprano to my hot head Moltisanti that way. Who cares if Dave is in Van Halen. HE HASNT BEEN FOR OVER 20 YEARS. more years than he was in, times 2.

Get me some DLR BAND. Get me the EAT EM AND SMILE BAND. Get me some ROTH RADIO and the NO HOLDS BBQ DVD!!!

BRING ME THE FUCKING HEAD OF DIAMOND DAVID LEE ROTH!!

                ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

it's maddening... someone explain this shit to old number two while I pop about 5 Xanax and drink a 6 of tall boys to mellow OUT!!!!!

Not to even mention the other day when a caller was going on about losing his copy of the Roth Bible™, CRAZY FROM THE HEAT, and Dave not only acknowledged it was OUT OF PRINT but also recommended that the dude come HERE.

CBS will deny they will let him go until the moment they do regardless of what they say in the press .

CBS doesn't have to make sense unfortunately and we are all aware that they are snakes.

JV and Elvis are hell to listen to.
I heard 2 minutes on them talking about broken ankles and how people have to stand on them to find out how bad the injury is.

I don't want to hear Dave talk about Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan...he helped pioneer the kind of rock that raised the bar, but he can dial up the entertainment value on his show, and a good honest rant about what is going on will make compelling radio.

Which as we know could get squashed on the net like before.

I hope Roth just fucking let's it all fly on Friday's show.
                          It's a must listen.

                                By DAVID HINCKLEY
                                DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

DAVE'S DAY OFF: The magnifying glass continues to hover over WFNY (92.3 FM) morning man David Lee Roth.

Roth was off yesterday and will be off today, with midday hosts JV and Elvis filling in. This quickly triggered speculation he was suspended or fired.

CBS spokeswoman Karen Mateo said it was neither.

"He wasn't suspended or let go," she said. "He's on his way back from Miami and he'll be on the air Friday."

While Roth recently complained about the station's proposed adjustments to his show, a few seem to have been implemented. There is a noticeably expanded presence of strippers and porn stars, with a correspondingly smaller role for earlier guests like Uncle Manny.

WFNY general manager Tom Chiusano, who took heavy on-air criticism from Roth, says that's just part of the package.

"Every show here has found a way to drag me through the mud," he says, good-naturedly. "This time, I wasn't even as much of the target as [program director] Mark Chernoff.

"As long as the audience laughs and my wife can still go to the supermarket, it's fine."
