On Van Hagar's "Live Without a Net" Alex has what appears to be an acoustic set with the Simmons sitting where the heads would be. The only real drums he's using there is a freakin' snare.

Electronic drums have been around for years and years...listen to some old disco and you can hear the occasional electronic drum. Modern electronic drums are VERY VERY different than those old Simmons were. The sounds are damn good on some of them, because they're samples of the real thing anyway. Hell, most drums you hear on CDs are just triggers of real drums. The drummer might be playing a real kit in the studio, but they put the triggers on his drum heads and what you hear is sampled drums. Much easier to control than putting a mic on the things.

True dat, but even on that album (outside of the HFT intro, obviously), those were kept to a minimum. They were all over the place on 5150, and not to the benefit of the finished product, either.

He is a solid drummer but can't solo for shit, agreed. Then again, most rock drum solos are boring...Bonham doing Moby Dick live puts me to sleep...'Bout the only ones I've really dug are the Rhythm Method on Show Of Hands and 100,000 Years on KISS Alive.

You get a good jazz drummer, though...those fuckers can solo their way through a whole SONG with technique that puts most rock and roll drummers to shame!

I think there is a BIG difference between 1984's drum work and 5150. There is definately more effect and clean up job on 5150. The best example of that is Why Can't This Be Love? and Best of Both Worlds. I couldn't stand it. In fact I think that is the second reason I refused to listen to their shit. They kept tweaking the effect to the point where Ed sounded just as awful as Sam. Note for shitty note.

On the song 5150, I kind of like the drums. Real fast and complex. They seem to really stand out on that particular song. I don't have an ear for it like some of you. I'm more of a school desktop pencil drummer. But hey, I can air drum the fuck out of most.

I think every band at least experimented with electronic drums in the 80's. Rick Allen was playing them before he had to. Pyromania is pretty much all electronic drums and he still had two arms then.

Hell, I got a U2 bootleg where I swear Larry Mullen's playing them, which really fucked up "Sunday Bloody Sunday". You simply can't play that intro without a real snare drum. Thank God they, and most bands, got over that.

But like Bob said, electronic drums do have a valid place, as a practice set in areas where volume control is a must. Also they tend to take up a little less room than a full drum kit, and usually those with sound restrictions will probably have space issues as well (i.e. small apartments with neighbors who don't appreciate drumming at all hours of the day & night)

Terry, watch Pearts solo on Rush in Rio if you like the Rhythm Method.

Would love to hear what dave could have done to songs like Good Enuff, Summer Nights or even the 5150 song. The music was kickass. I think, Its been a while. I havnt herd it in about 20 years ofcourse when I gave it a one time listen through and blew chuncks when the curly head fag fuckes up the songs.

Totally. Those songs were already written before Sammy came in. Made for Dave. Bummer.
