                  Roth Radio's Swan Song
                  April 21, 2006
                  By Mike Boyle

“It’s official, today is my last day." That was the word from David Lee Roth seconds into his syndicated radio show Friday morning (4/21), ending the nearly four-month CBS Radio experiment known as Roth Radio.

As Billboard Radio Monitor reported Thursday (4/20), CBS Radio and XM Satellite Radio are expected to announce that XM's Opie and Anthony will replace Roth in the seven markets where he succeeded Howard Stern, who segued to Sirius Satellite Radio in January. The duo would host a three-hour show on terrestrial radio, then finish their day with a two-hour unedited version on satellite. XM would air all five hours.

Telling his audience he was informed of his dismissal “in the car on the way to work today,” Diamond Dave also said the parting was not amicable: "I was booted, tossed and it’s going to cost somebody.”

Roth quipped that he and his “legal team of Darth Vader” planned to meet today with CBS officials to “settle like gentleman or start World War 9.” Roth said he has retained the same legal team employed by Stern, whom he replaced on Jan. 3.

Roth claims he gave up considerable touring money to take a job with CBS, but also said he wanted to continue in radio, hinting that television or satellite radio are future possibilities. “I have a shout-out to Sirius," Roth said.

“Of course we had crappy ratings,” Roth added, adding that he felt the show was finding an audience. “The flow was smoking.”

In other Opie & Anthony news, the duo spent a good bit of time on their Apr. 21 show taking jabs at Stern and his crew. Likening Stern to Adolph Hitler, the pair said that he had a “bunker mentality” regarding their looming return to terrestrial radio. They also referred to producer Gary Del'Abate as a "good soldier."

At another point O&A said that while Howard has publicly lamented his last 10 years on terrestrial radio, “we spent those years making a name for ourselves.”

“Haven’t we proven that we can do FCC-friendly radio?” Anthony Cumia later asked rhetorically. “By the way — today’s show, yesterday’s show — without the ‘fucks’, we could do them on regular radio.”

                  Same ole song and dance...

Dave told the listeners he really liked doing radio and if CBS canned his ass, he would march right over to Howard Stern and ask for a job.

I think Dave got a bogus deal at CBS and they probably will try and screw him out of his pay as well. For as little radio experience as Dave had, I thought he did remarkably well.

Hey, if Howard gives Dave a gig, I might just get satalite radio to listen to here in the office. Maybe CBS just did Dave a big favor.

If it's really over for Dave on air, then I say that's better. It was all right when he did his 5-day supply last year, but I had long got wearied of it.
Dave is worth so much better than that - lowering himself to empty, predefined entertainment that aims at the average sucker. Now he'll be able to set back to his thing. Great news, except the reasons and the way he was sacked, maybe...

                        1st Stern then Roth

Lets face it. terrestrial radio has seen better days. They basically give Howard Stern the door with no support and now the give Dave the door without letting him find his niche. I didn't think Dave was bad at all. He really needed some more time to find his groove.

If Dave doesn't fit with radio standards, this is good news IMO.
But then we didn't need that waste of time, really.
