        He can't do it.

Joe Satriani or Eric Johnson can sit down and write a 4 minute instrumental song based on a guitar riff. Eddie Van Halen can't.

He's proven useless as a songwriter unless David Lee Roth (or some would argue Sammy Hagar) is in the room with him, and that includes VDIII. Or those three turds that Sammy slapped his vocals on in 2004, for that matter.

He could not come up with a solid album's worth of instrumental music to save his life.

Put him on the stage with Satch, Vai, Johnson, etc. and he would be totally out of his league.

If he had the right personality traits and self confidence, he possibly could do something like that, but the way he is if he was on a G3 type bill, afterwards he would go home and sob....

Maybe more like Santana type album. 10 songs all with different singers. The new Santana song with Steven Tyler is pretty decent. Maybe along those lines.

But this is like trying to find something other than chocolate to mix with milk. Sure it can be done, but it won't be the same or nearly as good.

I forgot to mention as long as "someone else" sings. Not Eddie. How Many Say I should hold me over for another 4,000 years or so.

I've thought the solo route would have been a good idea at one point, too: just don't bother with the vocals, Ed can play all the instruments except for the drums, which Al would naturally play...

But I'd have to agree with Hardrock69 and Ford: Ed's just not up to it.

Ed's best stuff, IMO, was always done within the context of slamming CVH SONGS.

I don't see what he has to gain by doing it.

If he wanted to make music, he could get VH back together, but I don't think he loves doing it anymore
