It's not about playing in time dude! It's about there being a bottom to the song when your guitar player isn't playing traditional hard rock rhythm. Holding the bottom together has nothing to do with meter, wtf? Van Halen is a 3-piece instrument band, you can't have your bass playing off doing runs when you have a guitar player who doesn't play in the pocket or conventionally himself, or you lose the semblance of the song. With the way Ed plays, you need a solid bottom, which Mike provides. Have you ever played in a band?

You're just flat out wrong if your argument is meter. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

And yes the music would lose the bottom without Mike's bass, Ed doesn't play like a traditional hard rock player. He doesn't chug along.

          The argument *WAS* timing.

If what you are saying is true, you are telling me that your hero has no rhythm timing at all.

Now please correct me if Im wrong, but dont Ed and Al write the songs long before a Bass player is involved ? They jam, just the two of
them ! Al must be forever getting pissed at Ed because he cant hold his timing, if what you are saying is true.

If you are talking about tone. Of course you need a fucking bass player to produce the low end frequencies. But this argument was that Ed would be a hopelessly lost out of time player without Mike's bass to provide him with a timing anchor. This is simply not true.

Any musician worth his salt can keep timing on drums alone.

Yes I played in bands for 15 years. Jammed, many many times with just the Drummer and myself. And no I wasnt wandering all over the place with my timing. Actually Im surprised as hell that a guitarist is telling me he needs a bass player present, or else he cant hold his timing. WTF ??

Some of these mini jams with my ex drummers were early Van Halen tunes, timing was not a prob. I find nothing easier than playing along with just a drummer, and can get a tight, synced sound.

And I am no EVH. I refuse to believe that Ed cant keep his timing with AL. There would be no Van Halen songs in existence if what you are saying is true.

panamark, you are right on that...alexis always said that him and ed are "together" and lay down the basic groove...mike is just there for the lower frequencies and to fill up when ed plays solo...

In terms of authenticity, can't have Van Halen without Mike and Alex there.

In retrospect, 'bout the only thing anyone had to say about Alex back in the day was that he had a large drumkit, and I don't recall anyone having much to say about Mike other than he was the bass player, later amended to he was the bass player with a bass shaped like a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Were Alex and Mike part of Van halen and did they make a contribution? Sure, but let's not overstate their importance.

Mike's legacy? "The fat guy in Van Halen" I can't give a fair opinion on that fat fuck right now, cuz he's had some pretty idiotic comments about Dave over the years. The sisters I can see, but not that puppet.
