Considering the direction Ed's writing was heading in 1985, I'd be hard pressed to think of anybody who'd be able to have averted Van Halen off the trail to pop-rock blandness, which is what the thread is really asking, right?
It wasn't just Sammy's participation that made Van Halen post-1985 so boring.
I'd have rather seen Patty Smythe in the band than some Roth clone like Torien, or Hagar, who was basically trying to pull a Roth while slamming him in the press at the same time.
