    Peoples Bands

We are here because VH was the first real 'Peoples' Rock band.

What I mean by that is that not only did they pay their dues performing at 100% before being signed foe years. Giving everything to play music and be at Top Form for those admiring created a rabid loyal following. Look at us were all here because of this tenacacity. Intensity that breeds die-hard loyalty and allegiance. Motley was that way to a degree, just more reckless. The last decade and a half has made this feat more improbable than ever or basically impossible.

Any Dave era VH album would have quadruple sales if it was done with todays marketing and tour efforts.

The modern band does an album every three years, milks 3 or 4 singles until they become unlistenable/unwatchable. Half of these hits are designed on its visual impact for MTV and other media efforts. The MUSIC's spirit is what suffers today. Linkin Park has alot of cool songs but they are still working on a third studio album while the first one came out almost 7 years ago.....Think about this-VH's WB life w/Dave was 7 years.

Anyway, the point is 'PEOPLES BANDS' and though most will either disagree or want to Glock me for the following observation, it's about loyalty, non-conformity, doing things your way for the meaning you wanna convey, true unbridled expression EVOLVING on artist terms NEVER puppeted by a corporate box. This band travels no predictable roads, makes time for their fans and has offered Punk, Goth, Industrial, Metal, Hard Rock and Alternative plates to the EXTREME.

The Music Meaning & Movement are the closest MODERN day act to capture the spirit of a PEOPLES BAND since VH but the Music isnt even on the same continent SO IM NOT EVEN GOING TO INSINUATE MUSICAL COMPARISON-just HEART and living for your Music with your entire focus with whatever results is good but SALES are only added perk.

AFI they are for real and the LIVE act is better than any disc just like our beloved MIGHTY VH.

Never thought I'd see Van HALEN compared to Linkin Park or AFI.

And though I get the point about "the peoples band" I doubt VH was the first.

35 years after the fact, it's easy to look at the Beatles as this mega-marketing machine that sold zillions of records. But behind all that was a real band that paid their dues for 5 or 6 years before they got a record deal. So that would make the Beatles a "peoples band" by the same standards. Then there's the Grateful Dead, who could sell out a stadium anywhere in the world, even if they hadn't put out an album for several years. Definitely a peoples band.

I would apply that definition to any band that got recognition through hard work, as opposed to corporate horseshit. Half the hair bands in the 80's were assembled by record companies the same way the Monkees and the Bay City Rollers were. Seriously, what was the difference between Slaughter and New Kids On The Block? One played their instruments (badly) and the other didn't bother with the pretense. Both were manufactured by the corporations.

Unfortunately, as the original post in this thread suggests, it's been mostly corporate generated horseshit since about 1996.

AFI had the #1 album last week. They have certainly paid their dues, so I'm glad to see it come to an honest rock band. Even though their musical style probably won't appeal to everyone who is a regular on this board. As for Linkin Park, they don't seem that authentic to me, but to each their own, I guess.
