Actually, I have an article around here somewhere in which Ed says he originally got the idea from watching Billy Gibbons hammer-on a single note. He went on to say something about Zep's "Heartbreaker" and thinking "What if you moved that pattern around?"

    I recently moved, it's in a box somewhere...or I would transcribe it....

    and oh yeah....

Eddie praised Alan Holdsworth so often in most interviews that I picked up an album and listened once but couldnt get through it a second time.

RR was amazing and it was cool how they respected each others techniques and talent.

To hear those who were there (and I have ) tell it, the Holy Trinity of guitar in LA in the late 70s was Eddie, Rhoads, and George Lynch.

Steve Hackett was another who had a tapping technique early on.

Tapping is always what people associate with Ed's playing, but he had a lot more going on than just tapping and whammy bar dives.

It was Ed who turned his back to the crowd...

I never heard that about Randy...

I never thought Eddie and Randy sounded all that similar myself.

You guys should hear the shit Randy's working on now though. He's doing some classical shit with Wagner that would curl your horns!

I remember Randy saying it pissed him off to "play Eddie Van Halen licks live...cuz it's what the kids want...". Meaning he did the tapping thing because it took off in the early 80's......

I never remember Randy saying he got "everything" or "learned" or "stole" everything from EVH...quite the contrary...Randy was a lot like EVH in that respect...he didn't really acknowledge his guitar influences...

GAR swiped it from me... two handed tapping goes back to the 40's actually but that book is the 1st documented version of it.

The initial article lost all credibility when started out about Axl...

Wow Billy Gibbons? That is the first time I have heard that one. I did though hear about the Led Zeppelin gig he went to and got some ideas that way. I still think some of it came from Holdswworth as well.

Thank God Ed didn't steal Randy's tone. No offence cause I loved Randy and still love Ozzy, but when I listen to Randy now his compressed tone SOUNDS like 1981. When I listen to Fair Warning from around the same time Ed's tone still sounds like multiple nuclear explosions.

But at least Eddie is the first one using powertools and dildos on his guitar.
                                :D
and its stupid to comnpare people like that i think.
