Which of the Replacement Singers Damaged Van Halen most ?
Gary was screwed going in. He knew it too-but didn't want to pass up the chance of playing with Van Halen. Can't really blame him him for wanting to play with Van Halen or for their demise as they were ailing before Gary signed on.
This is a non-issue, folks! Hagar and Cherone ruined it. There is no replacement for David Lee Roth PERIOD!
Anything else won't get you a Superbowl win, hoss.

Blackflag on DLR
sam! cause he had the longest run with VH. cherone was not in long enough to do any damage. sam ruined VH!
to go from a classic rock band that changed the rock world to a soft, cheese soft rock band totally tarnished VH as a band, the originals who are left look like the wimps and they will realize it later down the road when they are very old and people talk about the classic compared to the cheese.
its a damn shame. VH should have gone down in history like zep and all the classic rockers as the best. now thats tarnished cause of sam. although a dave reunion would save it and reverse the curse.

He never inspired or pushed Ed to a higher creative plateau and wore his intimidation of DLR like armor.
Sam was a clock puncher, a cock muncher, a free luncher and a water cooler joke to most music fans. Only he views his contribution to VH as "classic."
Gary was a humble guy, idolized Roth and got ED to play some of the DLR era material live. He took a "dream job" that no singer in their right mind would turn down. It was a lose/lose situation at best.
To summarize:
Hagar = VH fraud
Cherone = VH fan
Mezro...and I forgot my standard closing...

A Dave-Era fan gets to live his dream and perform the favourites that he grew up listening and rocking out to. He agrees to do a few Spammy era stuff, at the request of Ed, but continues to do the (Roth-Era) favourites he loved as a kid. When doing autographs with the band, he is noticeably humble. On record, he puts out music with the 3 remaining members of Van Halen, that, according to the synergy of those four, felt right.
You can't blame synergy or vibe, it just is. Just like you can't blame DLR for having the best synergy with the remaining 3 members of Van Halen, you can't blame Gary, a Roth fan, for his synergy with the remaining 3 members.
Gary's lived quite an amazing life, for a Roth fan! He opened for Roth himself on the biggest CD of his band's history, then years later is asked by the remaining 3 members of Van Halen to join them for an album and tour.
No blame whatsoever goes to Gary, he's a homeboy, he's one of us, a massive Roth fan. Our homeboy did his best, and if anything, should be saluted by fellow Roth fans for not only chasing his dream, but living it.

You said it, Mezro.
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

Cherone made a decent attempt. He had respect for the classic era. Unlike Sammy, who approached the classic era from a viewpoint of the music being great but Dave's limitations as a vocalist and lyricist holding the band back.
Yep, Cherone had some stage moves that raised more than a few quizzical eyebrows, but he served up the classic catalog large, and put some effort into the songs he did. Sam played the same 3 to 4 classics and phoned them in.
All about attitude. And in terms of that, Eddie and Alex's own attitudes have done more in the last 8 years in terms of tarnishing the band's image than 10 years of Van Hagar ever came close to.
