He knows he sucks. Look how he throws his headphones and guitar down and waves them off with a big,"Oh fuck it, that sucked" gesture.

Ed is full of denile. The alcohol and drugs have fucked him up and maybe cancer and it's treatment as well. Whatever happened to him, he's no longer the excellent guitar player I saw nailing all the VH classic on the VH3 tour. Ed was playing like a motherfucker eventhough Gary sucked and the new songs sucked.

A few years later we see this old feeble dude that looks like Golum from JJR Tolken who just makes noise.

In a way, old age and drunkeness shows us the real person because they don't give a fuck and just do what they feel first. Ed is showing us all what a control freak he really is and his fantasy was to be the band leader. It's all his now. He's the master of his universe but he's making shit.
