    Spammy era Guitar solos

Sorry if a repost but I would like to hear the take on Ed then vs. when he was with Dave. I say a major change and a much softer sound as we all know. Nothing like the solos of CVH! What your all's take?

Problem with all the Van Hagar solos is that Ed was going on autopilot...

As a guitarist, I can say that nothing Ed did after Dave left made me wanna figure out how to play it...There were no Eruption-like moments, where it sent me scrambling for my axe trying to figure out how he did it...

Van Hagar solos - pinched harmonic coupled with tremolo bar dive, some random tapping, then some fast trilling up the high-E string, open low-E string with tremolo bar dive...lather, rinse, repeat.

We'd all heard it done before, with more intensity, by the same guitarist with Dave in the band.

      Uninspired with Sam.

His solos in the Spam years weren't as ripping and blistering as they were with Dave. The soloing on 5150 was especially annoying. It was like he was trying to solo like Spammy sings. Like cats being tortured.
And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Genesis 21:17

          My thoughts exactly!

Could'nt have said it better myself. He became a cliche`d parody of himself.
Two words that sum it up. Boring and uninspired

As for using a drill on his guitar(Asscake aka "Poundcake"). Paul Gilbert beat him to it by a few years.

If he seriously wants to regain his title and become relevant again , he'd best be doing his homework.

I think that just playing with Dave again will change Eddie's playing for the better. Dave brings out the best in Eddie's playing. Eddie's playing sounded pretty cool on those 2 songs they did with Roth after Sammy left and before the Cherone crap.

Eddie played a solo on each of the first 5 Van HALEN albums...

                VH 1 - Eruption
                VH II - Spanish Fly
                WACF - Fools Intro
Fair Warning - Mean Street Intro
Diver Down - Actually there were TWO on this album - Cathedral and the Little Guitars intro,

Unfortunately on 1984, he blew it off and put in a fucking keyboard intro before Jump instead.

But still, that's 6 solos on 5 records, each showcasing a remarkable talent, whether using electric or acoustic guitars.

By contrast, only ONE Van Hagar album had a solo on it, that would be "316" on the FUCK album.

Compared to ANY of the 6 solos on the Van HALEN records, 316 was incredibly routine, predicitable and boring. And though it was supposedly named for Wolfie's birthdate, rumor is that even this solo was actually written in 1984. Which would mean Eddie wrote NO guitar solos in Van Hagar at all. Unless you count that "Balifuckterium" or whatever it was called on Balance, which wasn't so much a solo as much as a dumb song title that not even Hagar could hang a cheesy lyric on.

I jumped all over some sheep on YouTube for calling Eddie the "true innovator" responsible for Van Halen's success. If so, why the fuck didn't he "innovate" anything without David Lee Roth??

As usual, the sheep had no answer.

And there you have it . It's so obvious EVH blew his creative wad before DLR bailed. A percentage of their material/riffs (CVH) was culled from earlier songs that did'nt cut it. (Any doubters need only listen to the"Zero" demos) . VH's well of good ideas ran dry many years ago. "Up for Breakfast"? C'mon give us a fuckin break. Where's the 10 albums of material he's supposedly has ? If it's anything like "Breakfast" I'm not interested ,especially if The Round Rocker is squealing over it !
No matter which site sheep are drivveling on they must atone to the facts. Van Halen ain't shit without Dave !
                  Nice one FORD.

The guitar playing in "Me Wise Magic" is pretty nice.

Once again, he had Dave to light a fire under his ass.

You can't have Van Halen without Dave and Eddie. Together they had the magic.

Hey, I'll just take a new album even if the "tour" never happens. I just want to see what Ed's got left. Hopefully we'll be impressed if it's not full of a bunch of dumb effects like the sustainer in his porn song. I think Dave can pull his part off without a hitch but Ed? It's funny I say that because I used to think the other way around. I think Ed needs Dave now more than ever!

If you watch Ed's solo on "Live Without A Net", he starts it off by playing 316 (with Al drummin behind it), and this was before Wolfie was born. Although, I DO like Ed's solo for 5150 on the "Live Without A Net" video....with the delay, it sounded AWESOME! Actually, I like the solo to 5150 off of the cd as well. But all this was after Ed had nothing more to prove (in HIS mind), and started resting on his laurels! He actually had SOOO much of his killer tunes and riffs written before the band was even signed! He was just a FLOOD of inspiration back then, and he was still young and out to conquer the world. AND even then, he could be repetitive LIVE! I doubt that even getting back with Dave, that he'll get the inspiration to solo like a WITCH again!
He is still my favorite guitarist of all time, but I do HOPE that he DOES find that fire again, and his new tunes will thoroughly kick my ASS!!!!

The "HORSE WHINNY"...that annoying depressed note pinch harmonic that he pulled up on....which is in EVERY van hagar era solo....including that tired bag of shit solo in DEAD WITHOUT DAVID LEE ROTH...DVD
