So here goes... Are you going to see Van Hagar (because of Eddie or whatever the reason) or are you gonna wait for the real deal to happen? (And yes, we need to keep thinking that it will happen)
Be honest too. It's important to see how many people are willing to show their dick size and ball mass in this situation. Girls must show breast size and nipple perkiness to qualify. :D

When I was first getting into Van Halen, back when I was discovering REAL rock and roll, I was open to Van Hagar. Actually I looked at the band the way a lot of people do, as if it was ALWAYS about Eddie and the band from day one was ALWAYS some trio plus a singer. I had always preferred Roth but I thought Van Hagar was fine--for Eddie of course. (Actually there ARE no Van Hagar fans who are listening to that crap for anyone but Eddie).

I'll say it again, I bought 5 of the original 6 first except Diver Down (because I believed Eddie's lie that it sucked). I bought the two most popular ones first back in March 1997 when I was 15, VHI and 1984. Liked them both immensely. Then I think a year later I bought VHII, FW, and WACF. I don't remember the exact order though I do remember listening to FW in 1998. So aftr that, I sprung for the first 3 Van Hagar's--hey give it a shot, right? I thought at the time that they were OK. Perfectly fine. Not fantastic, but fine. All I remembered from Balance was "Can't Stop Lovin' You" so I decided not to buy that one.

Anyway I kinda forgot about Van Halen after the Cherone debacle. Now THAT was a no brainer, even at 17 I knew that whole thing was ridiculous. Then in 2000 I started coming back to Van Halen. I don't know why but I started listening to it vigorously. I actually used to fuckin' DESPISE the WACF album and I wasn't so hot on Fair Warning either except Mean Street and Unchained. Took me a long time to like both, because they're not easy listening and they're not standard rock tunes.

OK so in 2000 I was one of the first people to register at the Pasture Dump, and I was hoping that Roth would come on board, but I still thought Hagar was alright. Well that's until I found out about this place, and gradually in May 2001 I began to realize:

a) It wasn't always a trio plus a singer, they actually used to be a band where the thought of DLR not singing was preposterous

b) I didn't have to like post-DLR material to be a Van Halen fan

c) Van Hagar sucks and flew in the face of the Van HALEN attitude.

It's that third one that "really got me." It just dawned on me that Van Hagar was everything Van HALEN was not, and it was NOT a natural progression.

Our tastes change. I used to only like alternative music until 1997 when I realized what real rock and roll is. I used to like Van Hagar until I realized what the real Van HALEN is. I just think it's sad people in their 30's still don't understand that Van Hagar sucks. I mean when those shitty hair metal bands were out, I didn't live it but I'm sure people who did live it like that shit. Now, I bet a lot of those people look back on it and say, "What was I thinking"? God that was shit. Well that's my attitude towards Van Hagar. Eventually I came around. It just hit me, no other way to describe it.

Actually that's Ozzy's drummer playing for Sabbath and never heard of the guy drumming for Priest either. If you want to nit-pik, and I think you do.

Good post. Nice back story to the wheres and whens of listening to VH.
I was hooked at the age of 9, listening to VH1 from my sisters collection. (that I later stole) I believe I bought the rest in correct order or close to it. I also remember not liking WACF, perhaps because of the short song list? I dunno. But in 1984 I was a full VH freak. T Shirts, walkmans playing. I was THE guy in High School that everyone knew loved Dave and the crew. Even back in 84, it was Dave and the band. A very good band. But still, Daves band. Then the inevitable happened in 85 and bam, I hated VH bros instantly. "How fucking dare them break up a great band"! I bought 5150 and honestly, didn't mind it. It swung. It was close to VH sound without teatering off the silly love song edge. I bought Daves EEAS and knew instantly who the music belonged to. It was obviously Roth. EEAS was and still is, the next plateua to VH and the closet sound to classic VH you can get. I listened to a copy of OU812 at a friends and almost threw up. That was it. Hagar sucked big hairy balls and Roth was King of the rock n roll mountain for me. I always knew he was, but it took a failed album from Van Hagar and an awesome album from Roth to solidify that in my mind. Every interview Ed, Al or Sam has done since 85 makes them look like jerks and pretentious to the ultimate border crossing of Hollywood liars. While Roth simply told it, the way it was and is.
