THE FIRST NEW VAN HALEN MATERIAL IN 6 YEARS HITS STORES IN JULY:
I must admit to being a bit slow with the Van Halen info over the past week or so. There's a lot of info flying around that most people have seen, so I'll try not to go over it all too much - just the facts of the release are below, with a few extra tidbits of info.
The Very Best Of Van Halen release has been almost finalised and the details are as follows. The 2-Disc set will hit stores July 20, with the first single - It's About Time - set to hit radio in America this week.
It seems there was considerable debate between executives whether the release would be via Warner Bros or the off-shoot re-issue label Rhino. Wisely, the release is now credited as a Warner release.
The final track running order is still not set in stone - stay tuned for any updates regarding that. As it is currently listed, the compilation sees Disc 1 runs 76.32 and Disc 2 runs 77.57.
The new tracks features are confirmed: It's About Time (4:15), Learning To See (5:14) and Up For Breakfast (4:57). The tracks are described as classic Van Halen, with a progressive twist.
Warner's press release states the following:
* Van Halen is the #20 biggest selling band of all time with over 50 million records sold in the U.S. alone.
* Van Halen's self-titled debut album and 1984 have both been certified 10x platinum!
* The first-ever career-spanning 2-CD retrospective from the multi-platinum superstars!
* Liner notes written by David Wild (Rolling Stone - yeah, the same magazine that rated Eddie #70 in their Best Ever Guitarists list!).
* Also includes 3 brand new tracks with Sammy Hagar, produced by Glen Ballard & Eddie Van Halen.
* AS SEEN ON TV! Supported by a massive $1.8 million (media value) direct response television advertising campaign to kick off on June 4th.
* U.S. arena tour kicks off on June 11th! Their first concert tour in more than 6 years, featuring Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar. They will be playing all their hits from their 25-year career.
* Advertising running in Rolling Stone, LA Times & more.
* Syndicated Van Halen Radio Special to air this summer nationwide with emphasis in Top 20 markets.
* Major New Media initiative - grassroots and community outreach, wireless promotions, traditional online marketing including AOL First Listen and much more.
* Street Teams in top 10 markets. Broaden awareness as it relates to lifestyle events and outlets, slanted towards attracting and connecting with a younger culture/NEW VH audience. Plus Moto-X crossover marketing.
Now, what I can add:
* The July 20 release date stands and is now also the re-issue on DVD date for Live Without A Net.
* There remains some fear within the Van Halen camp about the re-union lasting. There are no firm plans past the release of the Best Of and set live dates, pending an evaluation on how things went.
* Sammy Hagar has been put through a rigorous exercise regime to get in perfect fitness for the tour.
* Word has it he three new tracks will all feature in the live set.
* It looks like Aussie fans will have to wait until August for a local release of the Very Best Of...
* It's About Time was set for an earlier release, but was re-mixed for a more commercial (radio friendly) vibe.
That's about it folks - not too much to add. It's now wait and see time! It's 5150 time!
