Well...... I've been playing guitar for many years, and studied music for many years too. Eddie is REALLY GOOD at what he does. The feel of music obviously did come easier to Ed than it did to Steve.

But....... Vai is definitely a better all around player.

They both are kind of stuck in their own groove as far as songwriting goes. That is like comparing apples to oranges.

Ed may have taught Frank's son to play, but it wasn't Ed that played guitar for Zappa.... It was Vai. Frank doesn't have any slouches in his band. (Read more on Zappa and you'll know what a real musical badasses he and his band were.) Steve is more versatile as a player too. Don't believe me? Listen to the Zappa stuff.

Another reason Steve Vai is better, and as a musician, this is HUGE...
...Steve has a way better work ethic than Ed. That's hard to find in a musician.

Ed peaked in 81. Sheeeeit... Van Halen peaked in '81 during the Fair Warning Tour. Diver Down only has a few shining moments (Hang Em High, The Full Bug, Big Bad Bill, Cathedral, Little Gutars) and the only reason 1/2 of 1984 is any good is because the good songs were written back in the day.

I totally respect what Ed and VH did with Roth. I'm not a Van Hagar fan, but I'll give some of the guitar licks on the Pre-Ernie Ball rig Bland Gaygar stuff it's due.

WHICH BRINGS UP ANOTHER GOOD POINT..........

[rant] WTF was Ed thinking? Changing your rig can be a good thing, but c'mon!!!!!!!!! Fender would have sponsored him! That's what the original Frankenstrats were (thus the name). Even though they were not top line, Kramer did a good job too. The Ernie Ball guitars were built well, but were not that good of an all around guitar. Now I won't dog all the Peavey stuff because the T60 guitars and T40 basses kick ass, some of their amps kick ass too, but the Peavey EVH guitars f'n blow.

The 5150 1/2 or full stack blow because there is zero in the way of a good clean tone, and the only decent sound it does have is that crappy ass rubber band sounding tone Ed uses all the time now. The combo's are good, but only if you have a Tube Screamer and a good Echo Unit.

    WTF ED????????? WTF MAN????????? [/rant]

    Sorry about that.

Now that I think of it............. Frank Zappa was a better guitarist than the both of them.

Let me clear this up for some of you very confused people:

Eddie is the friggin KING - he can out drink Vai. He can slobber and get lost using monosyllabic words. Eddie can sometimes piece together whole sentences and remember the original point he was making. Vai uses the very common man style of sober speech and intelligent conversation (boring). Ed can cut his own hair when he gets upset. Vai seems to let the pros do it (too fashionable). Ed is much more talented at getting his wife to leave him a drunken mess and have a dumpy Jack Osbourne son. Silly Vai is known to have a "normal, happy" family (Partridge Family). Eddie has the amazing ability to time travel backward and play like he did when he was 12. Like everyone else, Vai pursues forward, positive progress in all areas of his life. Eddie can get his lame-ass Van Gaybar band kicked off Warner Bros after his Cherone debacle. Vai has his own label (Donald Trump wanna be). Ed enjoys scaring people with his old man/Keith Richards looks. Vai enjoys scaring people with his GUITAR PLAYING SKILLS

        The evolution of rock guitar:

        Jimi Hendrix
        Eddie Van Halen
        Yngwie Malmsteen

If you think otherwise you are clueless and uninformed.

By the way, notice how Vai is completely irrelevant.

I am a huge Vai fan and used to be an even bigger EVH fan. Let's get something straight. EVH did not invent tapping. He did not invent whammy bar technique (Hendrix did a pretty good job with that.) EVH created some of the most amazing records in rock history and helped reestablish rock music as a mighty force. That said EVH is pretty one dimensional. I have many boots of him playing with other bands, and he sucks. He plays the same licks, regardless of the song in question. EVH is great in Van Halen, but that is it. He is not versatile, he is not well versed in theory, and he isn't the be all end all regarding technique. He does however have the EVH thing down and for that he is a legend.

The one thing that he has always had over Vai, is the better songwriter.

Hey, Eddie CHOSE TO BE A DRUNK - nobody wanted him to be. None of us wanted to see him completely ruin his own life. Dave was asked whether he concerned about Ed's health. Dave said that if the person with cancer doesn't care, why should he? This is a paraphrase. Plus, Ed is the one who dragged Jack Osbourne Van Halen onstage and Val is a celebrity in her own right. These are not people running from the limelight. If you don't like my sarcasm, too bad - go the VHLinks and enjoy yourself

up until 1984, maybe, but WE know who the songwriter was.

Jimi Hendrix did not invent everything he did. Ed Van Halen did not invent everything he did. And Yngwie certainly did not invent everything he did (he stole it from violin players and classical music).

But that is not the point. The point is that Jimi, Ed, and Yngwie played the guitar in a way that completely redefined what can be done with an electric guitar. It was not any one technique but rather an entire approach to playing that was not thought possible or even imagined before.

Vai may be a better or technically superior guitar player to Ed. But that does not change the fact that Ed was one of the big three and Vai was not.
