What people want, and what is probable, are two different things. I too would like to see Dave, Mike, Ed, and Al go out one last time, but my preferences between the two singers tends to lean toward the one most likely to get along well enough with Ed to cut and finish a new Van Halen album, and whether folks like it or not, basic historical logistics in Van Halen's patterns of business and groupthink support the theory that given a sober Edward, a new LP would more likely manifest with Sam at the helm instead of Dave. Dave is notorious for being difficult to work with, and a number of credible sources in and and outside the band have corroborated this time and again throughout the years. I'll always take the studio LP over a tour. That said, a seventh Dave album would be pure chocolate frosting goodness, but I'd hardly sniff at a fifth Sammy album either.
I've seen enough CVH live, so perhaps I'm biased. I'd love a tour with Dave again. I'd love a tour with Sam again. I won't love a tour with any other singer outside of these two, and I won't love a tour without Mike Anthony.
Above all...I'd love for Ed to be healthy and happy regardless of what I'd enjoy as a longtime fan. If he was inclined to creative productivity after he's gotten his shit together for an appropriate period of recovery, a new album is worth more than anything else Ed can offer, to me. The smart money, presuming Ed goes through rehab and it sticks, presuming again that he in fact wants to play in public afterward, is that he'll make amends with Sam and Mike, add Wolfgang as a fifth member, probably on rhythm guitar, and hit the road.
