To the world at large he's a relic of the 80's.......It's a bunch of fucking BS, but I think the split also had a lot to do with it, of course. Had they stayed together he would still likely command the respect he did in those years(and his early solo career). It's a load of bullshit, those 6 records and live shows of that era(as well as CFTH, ALAE etc) speak for themselves........Who gives a fuck though, really? Dave is a legend, and the music will live forever.........

I'm kind of glad Paul did that. :D After the assassination Lennon gained a kind of messianic status, which dead rock stars often get and in my opinion, don't deserve. Paul was every bit as important to The Beatles as John.

seems easy enough to figure out. Anytime someone acts like a clown as much as DLR, people tend to not respect them, until they act serious also. He has never gotten rid of the schtick he does. I think mainstream thinks he is a goof with no substance. This isn't how I feel, I love dave, but people tend to not give respect to people like this. I think same goes for some comedians. you see comedians stretch themselves and do something serious like Jack Black in The Holiday. The Holiday? Come on. Jim Carey in Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. May be good, but is a different vehicle.

What was it Roth said about the critics...something along the lines of the reason so many of them hated him and loved Elvis Costello is because so many of them looked like Elvis Costello...

Dave and CVH never got much critical acclaim (outside of a few guitar mags and rock rags) back in the day because they weren't pretentious and had no ambitions or designs beyond being a kick-ass rock band.

Plus, it's an easy out for many to just look at Roth's showmanship and focus on the flashy surface of his presentation and proclaim that was all he was about, and blather some nonsense about how Eddie's playing was the only worthwhile thing going on in CVH.

If Dave and the rest of CVH actually do pull off a reunion, respect can also be measured by the response in ticket sales. Also, all I have to do is just listen to my local classic rock station, which plays just as much CVH (and thankfully ONLY CVH) as they do Led Zep, The Who, etc.

The weird thing is that in Dave's case even some of his self-proclaimed fans continue to bash him - for his looks these days, his voice not being in shape, his recent albums, his not so recent albums, his leaving Van Halen - which of course was a mistake but no reason to make fun of the best frontman of all times, much less as a "fan".
