I always saw Van Halen as the band that brought rock and roll back.

I was spending my summers in Newport Beach, CA in the late 70's. In those days it was more of a Southern California surfing town than the luxery spot it is today and for you real old timers, Newport and Balboa Island is where Dick Dale use to play his surf guitar in the early 60's.

Anyways, while surfing and checking out the fine ass on the beach the music of the late 70's was disco. People went to discos and wore those Angel Flight pants, rayon shirts, and platform shoes. People use to rollerskate disco and instead of rollerbades they rollerskated.

The only thing I listened to was KISS and Led Zeppelin. Rock was almost dead and disco was ruining everything. In the UK there was the punk rock thing happening but in LA that was kind of an underground thing.

When Van Halen hit, they hit huge. They were rock and roll and brought back the songs of some great bands like The Kinks. Dave Roth was exposing us to Al Jolson, The Kinks, Roy Orbison again while Eddie Van Halen was going somewhere new with the guitar.

    It was absolutely spitacular!

Today, rock is dying again. Much like the late 70's. Is another big movement going to bring it back or is it just going to be people downloading MP3's. Who listens to the radio anymore? I don't. Maybe music is becoming a niche market individual thing instead of the concets and festivals we used to enjoy in the 80's and 70's.

Rock has become yuppie dip where classic instrument are purchased for millions by collectors and you have to be rich to see the Rolling Stones. It sure isn't about giving the kid with $10 to blow a good show anymore.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

Great post. The HOF video montauge didn't begin to cover the whole spectrum. Make no mistake, arena rock acts were alive and well when VH dropped. Disco, the burgeoning punk movement...

The punk movement? Lot's of folks attribute The New York Dolls to be a harbinger of that deal. The Stooges as well. MC5 precludes them both. In each case, these bands displayed reckless disregard for the status quo of Rock And Roll. No blues-based schlock..no organ solos. Don't get me wrong, the blues-based classic rock was/is cool.

So basically, you had Van Halen dropping a bomb on all of it, plus the disco.

Captain Sensible (longtime underrated guiatrist of The Damned) was talking about various stuff on that old Westwood Radio show one night....pretty funny fucker. I remember his reply to a "post-punk" query.

"That old Van Halen record was fookin' post-everything...it came out of nowhere."

Rock music always appears to come in cycles - Elvis, Beatles, Led Zep, VH, Nirvana. A lot of Brit bands like Oasis took up the mantle in the mid 90s. 21st Century rock? Dunno, maybe Arctic Monkeys...

Delusional. Van Halen 07 isn't gonna bring back rock n roll. It'll be nostalgia tour if it happens, no songs beyond 1984. I've just watched one of their shows from '82. Total balls to the wall rock. It can't be repeated. It's all about the time and place - hence the cyclical nature of rock. You may not like the Arctic Monkeys but a hell of a lot of people do and it's bands like them that are defining THEIR era.
