Well being a massive Dave era fan I have to admit I enjoyed getting the bootleg of the opening night show. Sure I like Dave a lot more than Sammy, but I still find myself buying or trading for all eras including Gary..
In 1996 I was crushed when the announcement was made Dave is out. I still have to admit I can understand why. Dave and Ed still hate each other and both want to believe they are "Van Halen". Sad but true Eddie won.
Dave left in 86, man I wish he hadn't but Hagar was about the only replacement I could understand. Anybody remember Phil Collins and Pete Townsend both said they would love to sing on the new Van Halen CD (5150) Man then I would be sick.
The concert was intersting. Sure with Dave would be more fun and Chaos but hey Ill take what I can get.
Van Halen with Roth- Ohhhhh Baby!!!!!
Van Hagar- Better than nothing, a lot better than nothing.
cool pix!! yep, DD-bckcovr is from Tangerine Bowl, opening for Stones fall '81.
but -- the omnipresent white shoes aren't patent, Gslinger. ed started wearing those Capezio white jazz shoes because he liked the way they looked on DAVE (who actually wore them more for function, not fashion --at first). 1978.
i remember thinking they were so ROCK ... i had to get some. what were they? i was, like 16 ... had girlfriends that were dancers (tiny little midwest town); they hipped me to what the shoes were and hooked me up with their dance-supply co.
the things are light as slippers, with incredibly-thin suedeleather soles. i wore 'em out running around in the concrete streets.
no wonder Dave broke his ankle jumping around on concrete for the back cover of VHII ... and, that's when he started taping his ankles up, folks.
later, in like 1982 or so, those Capezio Jazz Shoes got really popular for some reason (Dave, trendsetter again). remember?? all the girls wore 'em. but, not genuine jazz oxfords -- shoe companies knocked 'em off and put regular soles/heels on 'em, so they'd be useful as streetshoes.
whatever, sheeesh. the pix/comments here triggered strange old memories and i vomited-up all this useless knowledge ... apologies.
Hmm..what if Hagar stayed with Montrose, and Roth with VH?
Think we'd have two legendary bands?
I've heard alotta good about Montrose, but i was like, negative 20 years old, so you guys would know better than me!
