Cherone split because of writing conflicts. VH always put the music down first and told singers to come up with something. VH was gonna do a second record with Cherone and he walked in with Lyrics and said "these need music"
Ends right there. Ed and Gary both spoke of this in interviews.

Quick background on the now former guitar tech that quit or was fired and made the above comments seeing as it appears some people have questions about who he is.
The man in question Is Lonnie Totman. He became Ed's guitar tech midway through the '04 tour after Eddie went through possibly 2 guitar techs the first half of that tour (wotta shock). There's an old interview on the VH newsdesk site with him and while at the time he sounded very enthusiastic, there's hints that Eddie was a tough person to work with and for. Regarding Matt Bruck who's been with Eddie originally as his guitar tech for a very long time, his role has long since evolved into more or less Ed's personal assistant and tech at 5150 and is almost always at Eddie's side.
Regarding the actual comments and my own opinion, first off, I have no doubt Eddie's a motherfucker to work for, especially the past decade as his vices have become gradually worse but this is a pussy move on the part of Lonnie to post something basically saying Ed's a piece of shit person, than not elaborate on those comments ("taking the high road"..... yeah right) and than go back and adding to his comments to in effect, watering his original statement down. And it's unknown if he quit or was fired. And of course, he qualifies his remark with an off-handed complement that Eddie "sounds great" to an e-mail reply to someone on VH Links.
As a side effect, since his comments have been made, numerous people on VH Links, some with clear axes to grind against the current lineup and tour are now coming out with various vague comments about troubles brewing with the tour, all centered around Eddie. Of course, no one's come forward with a specific incident, not even a sketchy description of what exactly his main problem(s) are beyond "Ed's head isn't screwed on straight" which frankly, could describe his mental state as far back as the '70's. The common excuse of course is to protect the "sources" of these rumors.
Regarding who's going to fill Totman's role as Ed's road tech, it's possible if they don't find someone soon, Matt may step back into that role.
IMO, the only thing that's going to count between now and the first night of the tour is if in the extremely unlikely event the tour itself is actually postponed or cancelled again which would pretty much be the death knell for Van Halen or the first time they play live, whether it's a surprise club show a week before the tour starts of the first date proper of the tour. If they can get through the first show and look reasonably good doing it, than 9/10ths of the battle is won right there and will shut down a lot of the speculation.
I have read plenty of interviews from people who have worked with Van Halen, and they all say they are the nicest, most ego-free and down to earth band to work for.Granted, they are perfectionists and demand their equipment is well maintained and working 100% every night,or they can't give their fans 100%.It is a high stress job and this guy seems to have pissed himself thinking about working on a tour of this magnatude.

That's because they haven't done anything of note for almost ten years...

Are you Mr. Roth? I said yes I am. She said well Mr. Roth I can't serve you anymore because I think your drunk and if I was you girlfriend I'd put poison in your drink! And I looked in the bottle and I said why you old witch if I was your boyfriend I'd fucking well drink it too!!!!
Lonnie Totman needs meds. I've been reading his posts on guitar gear sites for years. Believe me, he's worked his way OUT of many jobs. He's a loose canon and Ed probably figured it out.
