Any word if anyone is taping this one? I'd love to hear a smaller venue show... I bet it's going to be loud as fuck in there.

Just got back from Mohegan Sun. More opinion than review I would say.
                  First -The Grades
                  Musicianship - A
                  Tightness - A
                  Tone/Sound Etc. - A
SetList - A .....Exactly the same

Dave's - A for effort, but the effort creted a bunch of cracked voices. He tried to hit many high notes I hadn't heard him try yet on this tour. But he kept trying any. Sang virtually every word - and well. I truly feel it's as well as he ever sang. Good but somewhat mellow showanship this time around. The blowup microphone is just ridiculous and Spinal Tap. Don't get it at all.

Al - A. Definitely the one who keeps it all together. I'm not a drummer but man it seems to me he's gotta be up there with the best.

Wolf - A-. I now see what we miss in Mike, and that is simply that he was quite animated, energetic, and always looked like he was having a blast, every show every song. Other than that, Wolfie fits in perfectly. I heard only a couple minore mistakes, but otherwise, the kid is real good. I thought he moved around a lot, came out wearing shades. Gotta be pumped in vocals, Ed and Wolf sound too perfect.

Ed- A-. The only reason he doesn't get the A is that his guitar stopped working for about 4 minutes during SGMAD. Interstingly though, Al and Wolf filled without flinching, and they actually did a pretty cool jam. Ed had a couple equiptment issues, but that's how it goes live.
Playting wise, Ed was right on the money ALL NIGHT. He even got the solo right in HFT, something I haven't heard from rehearsals forward, Solos were right on. He's still ED, make no mistake about it.
Inportantly, Ed and Dave hugged many times. It seems as if they have matured to the point that they realize how great they are together, and that neither one of them would be who they are without the other. At this point, I would be shocked if this didn't last a while. My sceptisism is now gone. Ed was all over the place with multiple scissor kicks and jumps. You could tell Ed was as happy as can be. It's like he's happy playing real rock again. His solo bores me for the first time ever. It;'s time to retire Cathedral, and it would be cool to hear him do eruption from start to finish once. Has he done this since '78? I don't think so.

Oh, and it still freaks me out that there's plenty of men hear who care about this - Ed wore full length camoflage pants, Red Ed sneakers, and no shirt.

The crowd - I had an F- for them for the 2 hour car ride home, but then realized I can raise to a passing C-. It's like the crowd was seeing an old girlfrined for the first time in 10 years. You're both single, are interested in getting back together, she looks phenominal, but it's wierd to be with her at first cuz you know she's been with other guys. But, you still hop in the sack and that never changed at all. Perhaps because of the casino location in the middle of nowhere. MAybe the setlist is too much to keep the adreniline going the whole time. I expect Boston to be a MUCH better crowed.

Overall, the performance blew me away. I'm telling you, for the CVH Fan, you can't really ask for more. Youtube give you zero indication of what it's like. They are heavy, pounding, and crushing and tight. Unchained, HFT, I'm The One blew the dorrs off the place. For Real. I actually even enjoyed I'll Wait. Sounds better in a big room, amd the solo is cool. My one setlist change would be switch Jump and Unchained in the setlist. I know they sorta have to close with Jump, but it's just anti-climactic and you're too drained at that point.

Then I hear the Red Sox win in my car on the way home at that The Yankees are down 2 - Love. What a day.

Was the show completely sold out? I saw Charlotte & Greensboro and they were both sold out and the crowd got +++AAA in grades from me! Surprised it seemed to be different here. What size was the crowd?

                        Dude-

I also thought it was the best concert of my life. But my review isn't as hard on VH.

I think my jaw is sore from it hanging open all night long...To say they were amazing, just doesn't do them justice.

I actually worry about this- how long can they keep up this energy level on this tour. Dave, Eddie and Alex were maniacs!

This was the best VH rhythm section that I have seen- I would say that Wolfgang and Al were the glue that hold it together- they were that good. To all the MA fans- he doesn't matter anymore. Really. And Al, like the other reviewer said- I am not a drummer but he is just amazing. I guess I was really blown away by these two because I didn't know what to expect- bottom line- they were inspiring!

Eddie- This is the greatest guitar player to ever live- and he showed it last night. No matter how old Cathedral is when he plays lke he did last night , as oppossed to the shitty half assed 2004 version, you realize talents like him come around once every 30-40 years or so.

And Dave? The toastmaster general was in prime form. I didnt notice or hear his voice cracking. If anything- I though HIS vocals could have been piped in sometimes- he was that good!!!!! Man, it was like magic for him. Having seen him last in 2002, its amazing what happens when is onstage with the VH brothers.
I do agree with the background vocals being piped in- even after Eddie would run around and run up to the mike (and he was gassed) the vocals sounded PERFECT.

                        Highligts-

                        Dance the Night Away
Everybody wants Some (best song ever)
Jump (i love the giant microphone- Dave is hammy, love it or leave it!
                        Jamies Cryin- really really awesome
                        Beautiful Girls
                        RWD

Aw hell, all the songs were great!!!

BEST CONCERT ever for me, and I have seen alot.

Just a few notes on the crowd- it was subdued but it was a really old crowd. I know this tour is going to skew that way, but there were some really old fans last night- around the bands age!

And, there were alot of families- we talked to one guy that had 6 10 year old boys in tow (not all his obviously), each wearing a 40 dollar VH shirt- like a little army they were! I saw a lot of little kids there and older folks. So it was rather tame.

Great venue for the show- I was all the way in the upper deck and back and it was still great.

Van Halen relives best of good ol’ days

01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, October 6, 2007

                            BY RICK MASSIMO

                            Journal Pop Music Writer

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — “Please, don’t ever let me be,” David Lee Roth sang during the opening song of last night’s Van Halen concert at the Mohegan Sun Casino. “I always want to be by your side.” Of course, he sang the line from “You Really Got Me” to guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and on the fourth show of the tour that fans have been waiting more than 20 years for, it was more than appropriate.

Last night’s two-hour show was plucked strictly from the Roth years, and it seemed clear, if only in retrospect, that in contrast to the earnestness of the Sammy Hagar years, in which the band was staggering under a stylistic straitjacket of its own making, these were the grooving, swinging, hook-laden songs of a band that was only a few years removed from playing Ohio Players covers — the fast shuffle “Show Your Love,” the breakneck “Romeo Delight” and “Hot for Teacher” (neither of which lost a step last night), the sinuous “Dance the Night Away” and “Little Guitars,” classics such as “Everybody Wants Some!” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love” and more. If the audience last night was experiencing a second childhood, it was just as clear that the band was too.

Roth’s replacement with Hagar was an object lesson in being careful what you wish for. It should have worked — it didn’t.

Roth may have lost some of the athleticism in his trademark spinning kicks, but his persona — a combination of toreador, seen-it-all burlesque queen and judo-period Elvis — once again proved indispensable to the music.

Eddie Van Halen looked like a post-punk G.I. Joe but bounded across the stage with his trademark exuberance, and his guitar solos were, as usual, jaw-dropping. His big solo spotlight was notable for the relative lack of his trademark two-handed tapping, with his volume-knob manipulation (resulting in a sound emulating a string section) most impressive.

Drummer Alex Van Halen, Eddie’s brother and perhaps the only hard-rock drummer whose favorite player was Ringo Starr, hit with authority but a touch and sound that was sweet rather than pummeling.

And bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s teenage son, filled in ably for original four-stringer Michael Anthony. If he doesn’t yet have the fretboard agility of the criminally underrated Anthony, his performance was admirable for a young man in his situation. He hit the trademark crystalline vocal harmonies precisely, and if he couldn’t keep up with his jumping-jack father he wasn’t relegated to the new-guy corner either.

There’s no telling how long this reunion will last — this was supposed to happen before, remember? — and there’s no telling whether the magic will be recaptured if the band starts recording again.

But for now, enjoy what’s there. While nothing might live up to the hype of this show, it’s a reunion to remember.

I loved the show. I saw a band that was loose but confident. It seemed to me that they weren't particularly concerned with giving a "Note perfect" performance. Why should they? They are still head and shoulders above modern bands.

Some highlights for me: in no particular order

Dave's amazing vocal on Little Dreamer

                                Eddie's energy

Al's snare sound (huge part of the classic sound)

Wolfgang's vocals (He's really singing people)
