Dudes, ED,AL and mike still can rock, the only problem is that Sammy give's off this under the weather no fun, no attitude, and definitly no balls vibe. In VH's case it takes 4 guys to make a band, the fourth being the lead singer. There not ZZ top or Rush where there is only three people putting input into the tunes. Since Sammy joined the band way back in 86, except for VHIII, this is what the chemistry has been. The two tunes they did with Dave blows anything they have done with Sammy. Ed and Al, are just recording bits and pieces of music not complete songs. It takes a guy with the imaganation like Dave to come in and hear all those parts and sit down with ED and come up with classics. It's amazing how fresh the first six albums keep getting, one after the other. Dave's attitude and life adventures keep them from getting stale. Sammy walks to the same drum beat everyday, and the music shows that. For christ sake he has not done anything with VH for 9 yrs. and the vibe and shit he injects into those songs are the same ole plop, plop vibe. Dave is a great storyteller, one minute he's going 100 mph. then backs off and hit's 20 mph., but that type of writing had the biggest influance on the way the other three played. Folk's it's not the music, it's that fourth vibe thats fucked up!!
musically VH not broken!

No argument with a lot of what you had to say there, but IMO ED is pretty much done. These new tracks were his chance to prove me wrong. Well he's not dead yet, so he still has a chance to show he still has it.............Why do I have the feeling he won't though?! -
Mike seems ok in terms of his contributions to the band at present. Is playing bass and singing background vocals as solid as ever.
Al has been lumbering along for a while now. Definitely more comfortable doing mid-tempo tunes than fast-paced, high energy numbers that characterized the classic lineup's repertoire.
On VH3, Ed was really fumbling around. Even on the Van Hagar stuff, it was obvious he hadn't lost his capacity to play (although I didn't care for WHAT he was playing), but by the time he hooked up with Cherone.......don't know what happened on that album, but Ed came across as someone playing with a lack of energy.
Last time I heard Ed, Al and Mike live was on that 1998 MTV live show, and they sounded decent enough, but there was little fire. It was a competent performance, but didn't come close to capturing the intensity of what Ray and Brian do when they're out there playing behind Dave these days.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment
