eds tone is just one in a million man. he just happened to be that one. all the fucking doors he opened up when he came out to all these speed players now. they wouldnt be where they are if it were not for ed.

Absolutely!

Ed's speed & technical ability was at an all time high during 1981, judging by the FW boots.
He literally could execute & play anything in his head, by that point.
But what strikes me, along with the obvious chops, was the ideas behind his lines & solos.
Listen to that outro solo during the Oakland version of "So this is love?"
All these amazing licks coming off the top of his head with that reckless but musical spontanaeity.

Compare that to an Yngwie, where everything is picked in scalar fashion, all the arpeggios are swept uniformly....
There's no magic in that neoclassical/pure speed style of playing.
It's all very rigid & sterile.
All those yngwie licks sound like they were rehearsed a million times & then pieced together.
Even Vai sounds too note perfect these days.

I love Ed's off the cuff, here it is, cram the notes type feel.
During the live solos on the Invasion tour & the '81 era, he just goes for it. He just creates on the spot.

But his tone & feel are just so impossible to get close to.
If you've ever tried to learn the solo in "so this is love?' or "push comes to shove" or "Romeo Delight"...man, it's next to impossible to nail his phrasing & bends.
All those little things he does naturally are very hard to incorporate into someone else's style.

The other side is an Yngwie solo, which relies on pure technique.
If you have a metronome & 10 hours a day, you can get there.

Most of Yngwie's playing is spontaneous, and improvised. He's explained that countless times...
