Steve Vai showin' Ed some respect!

Are you going to see your former bandmate David Lee Roth perform with Van Halen?
I’d like to if I can get tickets. It’s a hard ticket to get.

I think you know the right people who can help you out.
No, I don’t want to ask anybody for tickets. But I’ll probably go. I’m a fan of Edward’s [Eddie Van Halen]. He’s an historical legendary guitar player who changed the face of rock guitar playing, and I can count on one crippled hand the amount of people who have done that. And I am not one of them.

          That is fucking classy.
Isn't it refreshing when you see humility among guitar gods? :D

Nobody was putting humbuckers on Strats and using locking tremelo units until Ed Van Halen invented that type of guitar. Vai and Satriani clearly were inspired by Eddie in the type of playing they do and the types of guitars they play. It's nice of Steve to point out Ed did it all first and he was inspired and did his own thing with what Ed set forth as an innovator.

Exactly. The best thing a musician can do is go out there and play their best and be themselves. Steve is successful because he did that. It's the guys who tried to rip off Eddie Van Halen and take credit for it who went bye bye at the end of the spandex and Aquanet fad.

Robbie Robertson of the Band used Humbuckers in his Strats(See the Movie "The Last Waltz" from 1976).

And I don’t consider myself a rock star. I am a thoroughly trained musical person that creates compositions with the instrument.
And the fact that I can travel the world and find an audience in virtually any place I go, including communist China, that’s an extraordinary privilege. I’m a guy with virtually zero radio airplay, never in Rolling Stone, don’t have MTV, VH1 or any television, and yet I can play all over after 27 years. I look at that and say “Man, you better be grateful, Vai.”
Yeah, a real class act. A nice change from the vain, spoiled ego maniacs that think of themselves as "stars"

Actually I think it is fairly egotistical for Vai to even think that anyone would consider him to be a major innovator. Vai is a good guitar player but he is definitely not innovative.
