Also, to Nickdfresh, there is a difference between forgetting the words back in the 80's and then 25 years of smoking cigarettes afterward. Joni Mitchell, John Mellencamp and Robert Plant...all singers who smoked and who lost a tremendous amount of their range as years went by. It happens to any singer who smokes. Rob Halford is Dave's age and still has it. He doesn't smoke. Dave can work with what hes got and he's doing a good job at that. But, that is all.

Dave quit smoking when he started his EMT training. He discussed it on his radio show.

I agree with you, H. After the now defunct CBS radio gig, DLR trained and put together his Summer Tour '06 that demonstrated how well he sounds. The only difference I really see is that his physical appearance is leaner and he's very happy. It shows! He may have also cut back on smoking, since his DLR '03 CD had his sound with much more of a blues raspy sound. The voice has continued to improved year after year - DLR Tour 06 proved it prior to Charlotte.

                DAVE RULES!

Can't wait for the So CAL branch of this tour. San Diego, LA, LA, Anaheim, Anaheim. I'll make all five God willing.

Why do people always think Dave doesn't know the words to every song??? I've listened to boots and it seems back when they first started a tour he would sing every word. Then it just seems after the 81 tour he would just do his kicks, run around and sing some of the words. Shit the guy was doing all the acrobatics and still able to sing along with no problem. It sure is amazing that whenever they did a cover song in concert he knew every word(summer time blues, hellraisers and beer drinkers). That would be usually after a song he supposedly didn't know the words to.

Speaking of boots, we listened to an IPOD full of 'em recently. Road-trippin' to Charlotte and back. The fucker that used to do the intro would just SCREAM. Nothing compares to the Stockholm deal: "FOR THE FIRST TIME IN STOCKHOLM!...FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SWEDEN!!!......" Just fucking screaming!

We discussed how fucking funny that shit was....literally LOL.

Later on down the road, the grate old Montreal boot was blasting. Just driving along...it's like background music @ that point. All the sudden Dave screams "EDWARRRRRRRRRRRRD!!!!"....

                    UNBELIEVABLE.

                    SCREAMING!!!!!!!!

"That works on so many levels....fucking Abbot & Costello....The Honeymooners....."

I've always contended that there is an unspoken competition between Dave and Eddie when they are on stage. Dave has alot to prove to his critics, and EVH was one of them...I think now he performs sober as opposed to the 70's and early 80's, he's trained for this for months...
Months? Try years. Dave has been trying to get back into Van Halen since 1996 when Sammy left the first time. The Sam/Dave tour in my oppinion was Roth trying to show the Van Halens he could compete with Sam. It deffinately wasn't about making nice with Sammy or Mike for that matter.

I think by cutting Mike loose, it cleansed Van Halen of anything attatched to Sammy. Maybe Mike was the problem the lat ten years. LOL! Who knows. Dave is back and singing as good as he ever did. It's a different show but it's still great.

I think Dave is way more into singing both because he left his legendary acrobatics in the locker room, and because he isn't on drugs anymore, or a lot less at least than he used to be, which can but help.

So, is the fact that Michael Anthony is not there to cover for Dave's lazy flubs mean that he's now actually a better singer than he ever was?

He didn't play anywhere near me those years. I decided not to follow Dave when I was left returning a ticket for a refund in 2002 after the Sam&Dave tour canceled their upstate NY gig at Darien Lake.

I've downloaded DLR boots from the early 1990s up until 2006 here and there. Yes, there are shows where he brings the goods, and he tends to do better in front of larger venues (like the Live in Finland 99' show I've on DVD). But his singing is spotty at best and you tell he's not taking things too seriously at a lot of casino gigs....

Kinda hard to take ANYTHING seriously in Vegas when you've got tens of naked gorgeous women on stage with you.

In all of the shows I've ever seen Dave the worst I ever heard him sing was with the Jack Daniels spitting dragons. He was drunk himself, and although it was like watching a DaveTV show it wasn't him on top of his game. Looking back on it, he surely saw the crowd dwindling at that point and it probably stung the core.

The Sam & Dave show served its purpose for one thing only, to show just how horrible Spammy really was. He needed bassplayer to show up for his gigs because he was irrelevant otherwise. bassplayer brought his some sort of legitimacy to Van Hagar fans. Watching Spammy and bassplayer pound on his dressing room door and tour van proved once and for all who the lead singer of Van Halen really was.

And all of us fans shout from the rooftops in down in the valleys...

DAVE OR THE GRAVE SHEEP MUTHAFUCKAS!
